Cycling

I bet Joanna Rowsell said "What the fuck?!"

Ha ha

It's already been said but going "all or nothing" can really put you off cycling mate.

Whilst it's an alright marker, doing a circuit session, the real thing is a lot more draining when you've got to consider wind, mental energy to watching cars and carrying a fuck ton of stuff to work.

Keep at it and take it easy, you've got to go through the leg burning part yet!

Wind and hills. Fucking nightmare. My cycle to work was fine, slight incline in a few places nothing too serious with a a cracking near one mile hill going down.

Coming home however, took me about 3 weeks before I could cycle all the way up that mother fucker. But it was a great challenge and personal sense of achievement when I did finally manage it.

I got some of that kit today. The headlamp is fucking blinding, brilliant! The hi vis reflective backpack is huge and fairly comfy. Tested the pump on my daughters bike and works really fast (on tiny wheels admittedly). Just need for the money to change hands between work/cyckescheme/retailer and I'm good to go pick it up.

I wasn't overly disheartened by that cardio session as I haven't done any in years, and I have a heart rate monitor so i can do the same session over and over and try and push for a higher average heart rate and see if I can burn more calories in the same time. I'm quite target driven so hopefully the challenge will be enough.

Just bought my first bike in about 8 years, using our work's 'Cycle to Work' scheme. I cycled to and from work 3 times this week, it was tough going! Sheffield's hills are not forgiving for someone who hasn't cycled for so long and done little cardio for a couple of years.

Looking forward to getting fit, saving some money (this'll workout cheaper than getting the bus to work) and just getting out and about.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had 3 weeks of cycling to work and noticed a huge difference in stamina already. I think I've had my seat too high though as my back's hurting, feels like I've overstretched it. I've made some adjustments and after a couple of days on the bus I'll get back to it.

Does your bike have the correct frame size for you? I know some people whose backs acted up because their bike was too small for them.

Yeah, the frame size is ok, I've had a couple of cycling nuts check that for me. The problem seems to be that I had pretty much straight legs at the bottom of a revolution, rather than the accepted 10 degrees. This was causing me to overstretch and hunch over.
