Logos

My advice

1) Keep it simple. Always simple

2) Can you actually read what it says?

3) Remember it might need to go on a website, a cap, polo-shirt, van, print advert, pens and more.

4) Square logos can be a bit of a pain for websites because they take up a lot of vertical height in a a typical website header. It's not insurmountable but can be a small issue. Horizontal logos tend to be most common.

5) Logos should be in a scalable vector format (allowing it to be blown up to any size with no loss of quality) - anybody supplying a logo in png, or worse still, jpg doesn't know what they are doing.

6) Careful with 'free' logo designers on the web, the small print usually has restrictions on the usage and you don't own the logo outright.

7) £50.00 - £100.00 quid is a fair rate, £1000.00 is taking the piss unless it's for a serious corporate logo with a lot more effort going into it. Try to think of it as 'paying for time and skill'. Your average plumber would probably charge you at least £30.00 an hour - it's the same with a graphic designer, and a lot of time wasted is to the to-ing and fro-ing of 'can you just change the colours?, can you try a different font? etc etc.

These two bold points are massively important.

The amount of times I've done some work for people and asked for a logo and you get a tiny jpg, then if you mention the word vector you get completely blank look from them.

If it's overly complicated then it also becomes a pain to fit in with other things at a later date.

Keep the simple thing to everything you get done as well, letterheads, website etc.

The current trend in web design is absolutely abysmal for actually finding what you want and has gotten worse since google started penalising sites which aren't mobile friendly leading to changes in the looks but worse functionality in my opinion.

Clean and simple always works best and if you do it right will still rank OK on google and display right on mobile if you put some effort into laying it out correctly.
