Great attitude from Danny Ings

Having returned to first-team action at Derby in midweek, it was back to the more austere surroundings of Prenton Park for Danny Ings on Sunday.

U23s duty isn’t quite what the Liverpool striker envisaged when returning from injury, ahead of schedule, at the back end of last season. For now, though, it is where Ings needs to make his mark.

Job done here, then.

Two goals, both of them stamped with genuine Premier League class, helped see off Sunderland. Jurgen Klopp wasn’t at Tranmere this time but he’ll have received positive reports about the 24-year-old’s form and fitness.

When a senior player drops down to the U23s, it is a test of character as much as it is quality. Do you see it as a demotion or an affront? Or do you take it as a challenge, an opportunity to press your claims – a game of football in which to showcase your talents?

Some can’t handle it. Stan Collymore once refused to play for Liverpool’s second string, while Jamie Carragher tells a story of how a group of fringe players called in sick for a Monday night reserve-team fixture at Anfield. The reason? They wanted to attend the rescheduled Grand National meeting at Aintree.

Ings, though, is made of different stuff. And if Klopp wanted proof, he needs only to watch a video of this game.

Here, Ings worked and worked and worked. He talked and he ran, he showed, he linked and he tracked. And when the chance came, his quality took care of the rest.

His first goal was a poacher’s effort, following up clinically after Ben Woodburn had been denied by Sunderland goalkeeper Maksymilian Stryjek. Satisfying, for any centre forward.

He then added a picturebook second, meeting Pedro Chrivella’s cross with a full-length diving header, angled perfectly into Stryjek’s top right-hand corner. Some finish.

In between there were twists, turns, recovery runs and neat reverse passes. He might have had a couple more, working the goalkeeper on a number of occasions and banking a much-needed 90 minutes.

He left the ground smiling, posing for photos with a few eager supporters. He was right to be happy. In an era of ego, his humility and desire for self-improvement stands out a mile. No wonder the supporters sang his name at the iPro last week.

It’s clear that he has work to do if he is to force his way into the first-team picture at Anfield. If Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi are having to be patient then what chance Ings, whose playing time under Klopp amounts to just 54 minutes? His knee injury could not have come at a worse time, and has left him playing catch up in more ways than one.

Liverpool are scoring freely at present, and have an abundance of attacking riches. It’s not an ideal situation for a player who has already missed so much football, but patience is required. Patience and performances.

Klopp has had nothing but good things to say about “Ingsy” since his arrival on Merseyside, and hinted last week that he would look to “pay back” the striker for his hard work and his head-down attitude.

On this evidence, it may not be too long before that payback arrives. In the first team.

Point was made on the Blood Red podcast a week or so back that Klopp may be taking a longer term view on the likes of Ings, we don't have the first team games to play him this season, and he's just coming back from a serious injury so it's in the clubs interest to keep him here, let him recover slowly play the odd cup game and next season when, hopefully, we have more games he should be raring to go.

The risk with that is making sure that Ings buys into it and doesn't get frustrated.

I'd be surprised if he did.

As I said he was playing week in, week out.

With the new telly money he could probably get a pay rise in Jan and actually play football.
