Georginio Wijnaldum

Gini was a winger and attacking midfielder when he was younger, then started transitioning into a central midfelder, but when Newcastle bought him, they played him on the wing or further forward like when he was younger because presumably they needed his attacking qualities more than his qualities as a central midfielder.

If I remember correctly, there was a period of time where we dreaded the midfield combo of Milner, Hendo and Gini, as all three were a bit similar. This was especially after Coutinho left and while he was here one of those three would normally miss out, even Hendo at times as Coutinho would always play. It was only after Coutinho left that Ox started to get a regular run and hit a good patch of form, which again meant one of the three would miss out occasionally to accommodate Ox.

I tend to agree with @m0e as I don't think Gini was deemed indispensable in the same way as now back then, by most fans. As was also the case with Hendo too.

Huh? Agreed he had a three match run in the CL - that doesnt change the fact that he really did not play much leading up to that. He wasn't being rested because he was a first team pick..

As an example Henderson started every game but two in the league and the CL during that run from March on - he was a first team pick.

Gini started the first game against Citeh. He had played every league game since March as well.

AoC was preferred to Gini twice during that entire run, the second game at City and the game where he was injured.

Gini didn't start the first leg, he started the second in place on an injured Henderson, and in the number 6 role.

So that's a 3rd game where Oxlade was ahead of Gini. If you want to count the league games in between on an even keel with the CL, that's where your argument falls short for me.

And even then, Oxlade started the league games when we didn't have a CL tie in between. You can check the records yourself.

Oxlade got into the side before the CL quarter finals and was seen as a first teamer before he did his knee in. I can't understand how you remember it differently.

Why would Oxalde have a 3-match CL run ahead of Wijnaldum if he wasn't considered ahead of Wijnaldum in the pecking order?

Because the tactics for those matches dictated it. It is like suggesting Gini wasn't a first teamer because he did not start the Barca game.

Not really sure how this is turned into an argument - Wijnaldum has played more than any other midfielder during his time here - he has been and undoubtedly still is first choice. Klopp trusts him. If you think Ox would have continued on into the next season ahead of Wijnaldum in midfield that is fine. I don't. But he might have.

TBH Ox seems a nice fella but for 90% of his career here he has been very poor. Useless when played in the front three and had a good stretch of what was literally a month in the midfield. Other than that he has been a disappointment.

I respect your opinion mate but it seems you have taken this onboard a little too much and are arguing for the sake of it.

He was actually a midfielder before that and came through the youth team as a defender. Playing different positions isn't that unusual in the Dutch system though.

Klopp isn't smiling.

Klop's smile is magnificent, but we are not in imediate danger of losing him.

Gini is great, but he isn't ice-cold, like Jurgen or Andre 3000.

As Michael Edwards would say: "Gini, don't mess it up for everybody.Bosmans don't float on no water."

Georginio Wijnaldum has asked Liverpool for more time before deciding whether to accept a new contract offer from the club.

The Dutchman will be a free agent in the summer and can talk to clubs from abroad from 1 January. Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp would like to see the 30-year-old stay but have so far not been able to convince him to sign the new deal.

Liverpool presented their new contract offer to Wijnaldum at the start of December but the player said this week that he would like a few more days to decide on this future.

He has promised Liverpool that he will let the club know of his decision before he starts talking to any clubs, should he decide that his future lies elsewhere.

The Dutchman arrived at Liverpool in 2016 on a deal worth an initial £23m and has won the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at the club.

It will be shit if we lose him in January, actually it will be shite if he leaves in the summer. He's a really important part of the team, he will be undoubtedly missed.

I don't see him leaving in January.

It's starting to feel like he's using the club's offer to get himself the best possible deal elsewhere. I personally think the club should give him a deadline before jan 1 and if it wasn't signed, withdraw the offer and make it public we've withdrawn the offer, so he can't use us to get his bosman. What's there to think about? Either what the club have offered meets his requirements or they don't. If they don't, reject the offer and we can all get ready to move on. If they're what he needs, sign and stop fucking about. I'm assuming our latest offer was our best and final, so just make your fucking mind up.
