With what we have now top 4 is a crack-pipe dream. 

 

Really?  I think we're a good midfielder away from a very good bet for top 4, and we're sure to bring one in at some point.

 

We finished on 60 points last season with a horrific injury crisis and throwing away 5 or 6 points at the end while we focused on the Europa League.  Add that back in (with no European games at all) and we're at 65, Karius not costing us games (all he has to do is be competent and not let in the first shot on goal 80% of the time and he's massively ahead of Mig) will get us another 7 or 8.  That's 72 points right there, and that's just with those relatively minor changes.

 

From there it all depends on the lads up front.  If Sturridge stays fit and Mane scores >8 in the league, we might get to 75 or 80 points.  If Sturridge is only fit for 20 starts and Mane flops, then we'll be right around 70 I'd imagine.  Either way we won't be miles off top 4; Klopp will get more from this set of players than you think he will.

As far as the quality of the squad goes, I think we're closer to making top 4 than most realize. Firstly, we've fixed the goal keeping issue. Mignolet was a massive weakness and made our defending look much worse than it really was. We finished 2nd behind Man City in shots on target against but we were only 8th in fewest goals conceded. Karius could be completely average and he'll still reduce our number of goals conceded just from the fact that he isn't Simon Mignolet. In addition, Sakho and Lovren have also proven that they can form a pretty solid partnership and Matip is a giant improvement on Skrtel. When we also add in a left back to compete with Moreno, we'll be set.

 

I think we are set in terms of the attack as well. We scored the most goals of any team in the second half of last season and in Mane, we got a player who gives us the exact attributes the attack was lacking. In a perfect world, we would buy a striker in case Sturridge can't stay fit but I honestly think he'll be allright on the injury front this season given that he's basically given up sprinting during games which will reduce his injury risk. Origi has also proven he is a capable replacement to Sturridge and our level doesn't massively drop off when he is leading the line in comparison to when Sturridge is there. 

 

Undeniably, we lack quality in midfield and if we don't get someone who can play in Henderson's spot then we will struggle to control games against smaller teams. But if we can buy that type of player, combined with the fact we'll be more well-rested than most other big top 4 contenders, I think we'll have every chance of making top 4.
