*yes, I know we're not buying Paredes.  But it's my fantasy, so I can pick a player we've been tenuously linked with if I want.

 

**yes, I also know that this means leaving out one of Coutinho or Firmino.  I still think the raw pace up front here would be a very interesting option against teams who try to play a high line against us, potentially making it worth the sacrifice of one of those players.

You've left out the wrong one.

 

In fact, you don't really need to leave out either of them. Assuming this Paredes fella is something approaching a holding midfielder, even if his name suggests he isn't a fearless African, then play Coutinho instead of Henderson. Holding midfielder, plus Can, plus Coutinho is the best midfield we can muster (if we signed Paredes or similar, obviously). 

 

What would Henderson give to the team that Coutinho wouldn't? A bit more jogging and pointing?

Not much in it really. They both press pretty well. Neither of them can tackle very well. Neither of them read the game well defensively.

 

Henderson might be marginally better overall, but not sufficiently to play there instead of Coutinho if Firmino is going to be the 10.

 

Personally, I'd play Coutinho instead of Firmino as the number 10, and short term we're probably stuck with playing Henderson in midfield because we haven't addressed the complete lack of quality in our midfield. 

 

We should have sold Henderson and Allen and signed a proper DM, and someone who can put his foot on the ball. Instead we sold Allen and bought some kid from the Serbian league.

It isn't marginal, Henderson is much better than Coutinho defensively.

 

Coutinho is much better on the ball, but Henderson is a much better player than Coutinho without the ball.

 

Coutinho could probably play that role against the weaker sides, especially at home.  But against the top sides, I wouldn't trust Coutinho to put the shift in Henderson does all help the full backs etc.

 

Henderson played very well yesterday when moved high up the pitch.  Not sure why he was playing DM, he's clearly not a DM.  Not sure why we are discussing this in this thread either.
