Mane did not even have the guts to take a penalty in the Community Shield, kids like Jones an Brewster had to take the responsibility instead.

How do you know he didn't want to take one? Are you basing that just on the fact he wasn't one of the selected five or has he said he didn't want to?

Jones and Brewster both regard themselves as penalty specialists and I expect both would be ahead of Mané in the thinking of Klopp even if Sadio was at the front of the queue saying he wanted to take one.

I remember posting something a month or two ago along these lines, but I’ll repeat it...

arguing about which of our fucking ace players is less fucking ace than the other is weird behaviour.

the discussion about Mane and Barnes is the sort of thing I can get behind, but Salah vs Mane, nah, fuck it. They’re both fucking ace.

I would have to say that Code has a point here. It's not cut and dry that Mane is in the top 3 in our current line-up, and there's certainly a debate to be had.

Whereas Barnes was the best player in England between 87 and 91, let alone Liverpool.

If the player who have been your second highest goalscorer the last three years wants to take a penalty you let him take the penalty.

Mane have missed too many, so he did not want to take one, thats fair enough.

The point is that a few people almost exclude penalties when they look at goals scored, they take penalties scored for granted.

But they have to be scored, Salah's second penalty against Leeds is a great example, even I was afraid he might miss that one because of the pressure, but he scored because of his quality and because he never folds under pressure.

I just cant rate a striker/forward who dont trust himself with penalties above Alisson, one of the three best keepers in the world.

agree with Bob, both Salah and Mané have bee excellent for us, as good I would say.

It was not supposed to become a discussion about Mane and Salah.

But this is how their penalty stats look like.

Salah:

19 penalties

16 scored

3 missed

Salah converts 84,21% of his penalties into goals, thats a pretty good record.

Mane:

6 penalties

2 scored

4 missed

Mane converts 33,33 of his penalties into goals, I have one word for that, abysmal.

Its actually pretty interesting how such a good player as Mane is, can be so bad at penalties, because a record of 2 out of 6 is really, really bad.

Thanks for the in depth post ! It clearly shows Mané was right not to take a penalty. Ouf !

He's buried one's in the champions league final and a very late penalty to take his country to their first World Cup in God knows how long.  About as high pressure as you can get.

Yea he's good at them.

His penalty kick vs Spurs was successful but terrible.

Terrible is hyperbole, Arnaud. It was as hard as you like, and on target. It wasn't central or obvious. And it was proper high pressure.

If I called it brilliant, that would be as accurate as you calling it terrible.

He's not got an orthodox style, nor easy on the eye, and it seems as if he's going to miss half the time. But he doesn't. He makes his mind up and leathers it. Plus, keepers haven't got a clue what he's going to do anymore.

Salah is a good penalty taker.  He varies his placement every time so that the keeper doesn’t know where he’s going.  Taking two penalties in the same game and scoring both tells you all you need to know.  He’s hit the odd poor one but it feels like ages ago now.

I honestly don’t think there’s anything between Salah, Mane, Allison, Van Dijk, Robertson and Trent for our best player.  They all go up and down in form (other than Robbo who has had about 1 bad game in his career) at different times and bring different qualities but I wouldn’t change any of them for any player in the world at the current moment and that includes Messi and Ronaldo.  I’ve argued that Mane is better than Salah before but it all seems irrelevant now.
