The Big Red One is a good straightforward combat movie.

 

Two on the margins are The Tin Drum and Life Is Beautiful.

The first and arguably the best movie about the Battle of the Bulge. Used a load of 101st Airborne as extras.

Among the worst war films I've seen. Not bad films in themselves but way below many other war films I've seen.

Where Eagles Dare is my go-to war film though: Clint and Burton being cool as fuck. I've still not got a scooby what goes on in the banquetting room but I know some nazis get killed and there's kerplosions. Job done.

The Aussies made a couple of good ones. Gallipoli and Breaker Morant are definitely high on the list.
