The word you're looking for is simplistic, there are far too many outside factors that influence it for it to give anything really meaningful.

The saves-per-goal ratio comes into its own when we're talking about Mignolet, because the one thing people say in his defence (accepting that every other aspect of his game is fucking horrible) is that "he's a good shot-stopper".

No.  He demonstrably isn't.

It's a bullshit stat.

What's counted as a shot, are all shots equal, is the chance of a keeper saving any given shot equal, does the opposition impact the result, do the team instructions impact the result, who's playing in front of the keeper, does the team the keepers playing for play a high line that subjects them to more one on ones or does the team crowd the box which increases the likely hood of deflections, do deflections count as shots.

It's not about Karius over Mignolet or vice versa it's the nature of overly simplistic bullshit statistics to prove a point one way or the other especially when it comes to certain positions in football.

By 3 stacks logic Mignolet has a lower shots per saves ratio than Karius this season and is therefore the worse of the two but without question the erratic nature of Karius' performances has led to more mistakes (granted over more games) and Mignolet has been the steadier keeper.

That doesn't mean Mignolet should start, it just means the stat, in isolation, is shit and I'd want far more information when judging the merits of any 'keeper.

To be clear, I don't need some stat to show me that Mignolet is a terrible keeper or that Karius is better. Then again, maybe other people like yourself do because when things are being said like "Mignolet has been the steadier keeper" when he's been nothing short of disgraceful for the last 3 seasons, then something that isn't too complicated like saves per goal could help clarify things a bit for you.

All those caveats in your first paragraph are dealt with by a big enough sample size. We've got several seasons of data on Mignolet. It ain't pretty.

Any statistic in isolation can be misleading. Fortunately, we've got the context of 3 years of shit goalkeeping.

Fucking hell. Gone full mong central in here. We were near to 6 hours without conceding a goal and all of sudden everyone is shit except for Matip. Have a word with yourselves. And as for the Gary Neville comments it came in a full interview about a range of things including a comment about Carra's views. Just bizarre.
