Wall to wall coverage of this yacht bollocks, you'd think it was the Hereld of Free Enterprise.

The missing tourists are billionaire Mr Lynch; his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

It’s on us though, isn’t it? We’ve become so lazy as a society that we want deliveries, but like anything else we don’t want to pay for it. If I use any of these services I never tip through the app, ai give it to the driver direct. And ai always tip.

There’s nothing wrong with inherited wealth, I’d love nothing more than to leave my kids silly wealth, the issue is the system as a whole, there is just too much of a gap between the top and the bottom. I believe in progressive taxation but the jumps are too infrequent and the rises too out of synch.  Everybody should contribute a fair amount according to their means. A person earning 12.5k should not be paying tax and a person earning 51k should not be paying 40% tax, a millionaire should be paying more than 45% and as for billionaires and big profit earning businesses well a much fairer sliding scale is needed. I remember there was a poster on here, can’t remember his name but as far as I’m aware he no longer posts, he argued that when somebody dies (that’s anybody not just the rich) their estate should go to the state and not their kids. I just can’t wrap my head around that kind of thinking. What would be the purpose of anything?

We need to change the way we think about inherited wealth, though. Firstly, we need to accept that it's unearned by the recipient, so there's nothing wrong with taxing it. We need a more widespread awareness of how under-taxed inheritance cements inequality in from generation to generation. We need to understand how few estates actually get taxed. And we need to accept that there's a categorical difference between leaving a house, car and a few grand in savings to your kids (currently, and rightly, unlikely to be taxed) and the passing on of great fortunes.

I struggle to move beyond my belief that a radical simplification of the whole taxation system is required. I cant see beyond some sort of Total Economic Activity Levy (TEAL) being the fairest system. One rule to tax them all and in fairness bind them.

You receive monada you get taxed.

You spend monada you get taxed.

At about 1%. Thats it.

Eton college has sent a letter to parents saying it will raise its fees by a fifth in response to the government’s removal of the VAT exemption on private schools. The annual fees will increase from £52,749 to about £63,000.
