I was thinking of "Gallows Pole" by Leadbelly/Led Zep/name your favorite version but I don't think anyone was killed (except by the hangman in some versions)

Highlight the link in your post, then click on the "Special BBCodes icon" (the little square box to the left of the Font drop-down list) and select YouTube.  Bob's yer aunty.

Oh, and there's a two-clips per post limit, for some reason.

Is there a murder in it?

Bobby Gentry has always been tight-lipped.

there is murder in this thread.  Not posting the original version of this song is unforgivable.

I grew up with the Bobby Gentry version, and have always loved it, including the mystery.

Sinead O Connor's version adds a chilling little twist that isn't in the original.  I remember the first time I heard it I was blown away.  You could say it's artistic licence, others will argue it's sacrilege, but it's as chilling as it is subtle.  Listen hard.

Ah, finally heard it.

Yeah, it's artistic licence, but it's one of the main theories that've done the rounds so she's not messing with the song for the sake of it.

yep, this - and lots of other hypotheses - was put to Gentry when the song came out, and she essentially asked people to draw their own conclusions about the song.
