Liverpool transfer target Marc-Andre ter Stegen's asking price could wreck move from Barcelona

The German is not first-choice at the Nou Camp but while the Reds are willing to pay £12m amid doubts over Mignolet, Barca feel he's worth £20m

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has identified the Germany international as a potential target this month, after being alerted to the 23-year-old’s unrest at the Nou Camp.

The Reds are prepared to offer £12million, which would represent a small profit on the £10m the current European champions paid Borussia Moenchengladbach for the player last year.

Ter Stegen has a buy-out clause in his contract of almost £65m. While Barca accept that figure is unrealistic, they are in no rush to sell the keeper who helped them win the Champions League last season.

The Catalan giants believe third-choice Jordi Masip is ready to step in as Claudio Bravo’s understudy, and see £20m as a fair valuation for Ter Stegen.

But that is still too much for Liverpool as they look for a genuine challenger to Simon Mignolet.

The Reds hope Ter Stegen will force Barcelona’s hand by making it clear that he wants to leave.

All 21 of his appearances last season came in either the Champions League or Copa del Rey and he has played in just four La Liga games this term as Luis Enrique has once again made Chilean international Bravo his first choice.

Ter Stegen would want assurances that he will be given the chance to establish himself as No.1 at Anfield.

Mignolet has struggled for consistency, but Liverpool have spoken to the Belgium international about a new contract.

Well that's just typical Liverpool behaviour that!

I know it's only an article and might not have a shred of truth but it would be just like us to identify by all accounts a quality young keeper then shit the bed over the fee when we've wasted more than that on unadulterated shite recently.

The majority of our player purchases should be star players from championship winning teams in smaller leagues or top players who can't quite get in the top top teams.

At least that shows their was quality there in the first place

Liverpool FC transfers: Who are the key targets and who could leave in January window? A full breakdown of Liverpool's plans for the January 2016 transfer window, including budget, history and top targets

By Chris Bascombe

What's their transfer budget?

£20m.

Who's in charge of deals?

January transfer history

Cynics will wheel out Andy Carroll and position him among the worst January deals in history. Others will argue Luis Suarez was the canniest signing ever in this period of the season. Liverpool also signed Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Javier Mascherano in the winter window.

What they need

Either a new striker or a miracle potion to keep Daniel Sturridge fit for the rest of the season. Klopp also needs more of a goal threat from his midfielders as he suffers the same problems as his predecessor with his side’s chance conversion rate. Most think they need a keeper but they’re not getting one.

What they'll get

Liverpool are specialists in signing players they’ll get next season. All the signs are their main targets are unavailable in January, but deals are being put in place with a view to new arrivals in the summer.

Key targets

Marko Grujic of Red Star Belgrade and Joel Malip of Schalke are confirmed targets. Leroy Sane, also of Schalke, is admired, but Klopp is on record stating new faces are more likely in the summer and there is competition from across Europe for their signatures. Klopp does have cash if he thinks refreshments are needed sooner, however.

Who could leave

Joe Allen has not had much of a look-in since Klopp's arrival and could attract interest in January. Some of the younger players on the fringe could move out on loan but Klopp's squad could not sustain wholesale departures. They are desperate to offload Jose Enrique who has six months left on his current deal.
