Thanks to the Greatest Album tournament, I've been listening to some ponderous noodling and meandering sprawls.  Bumping this thread as a palate-cleanser.

The Supremes - The Happening.

The Supremes were great but the production values and session musicians on that song are sensational.

It's the fact you can pick out his accent in there that makes this such a great cover.

Barney was on the Turned out a Punk podcast last year, seems a sound bloke.

It’s weird when he’s interviewed as he’s just some completely normal bloke who happens to be in Nepalm Death, probably why they’re so well known outside our little circle.

Anyhows...

A whirlwind at 2:07... so much beauty packed into so little time.  Seems almost deliberately rushed.

And even time for a 10-second instrumental at the head.

Their first solely acoustic track.

A lot of complex themes and beautiful lyrical/aural "trompes l'oeils" in just 2:58 here too, that I love:

Can't be arsed going through the thread but before 1964 most if not all singles were under 3 minutes because the manufacturing process didn't allow grooves close enough together to last more than 3 minutes. The microgroove process in the '60s did and Mickey  Most used it for the Animals "House of the Rising Sun" at 4 minutes 29 sec  which caused  a major controversy. Most Radio stations only played the first 3 minutes. I remember writing to one of the DJs at Radio Caroline and asking for it in full (so i could tape it on my reel to reel. I have a long history of illegal downloading). The letter was read out and I duly stole it (as did Radio Caroline, I don't think their business model included paying royalties). It was released at 2minute 58 second version in the states to suit their programming - and short attention span.

So, in brief, just about any great pre '64 single fits the bill.
