I like Elvis but I wouldn’t call him The King or even genius due to the lack of writing a single song.

Sure, might have had a hand in arrangements but that’s a pretty big strike against him, for me.

What relevance does him not writing songs have to how good a singer and performer he was?

Genius is a word bandied about far too readily and in this case entirely without merit. The lad could sing and some of his earlier stuff (pre army) was ok but the rest for me was shite!

I think we need to note the views of fans and musicians that lived through the times. Popular music can be divided into before and after Elvis.

Not so much a genius as a phenomena, His influence can't be understated on the first post war generation and the music that followed in his wake.

Whether in 2017 his songs are universally loved is irrelevant really,

I'm a fan of the Pet Shop Boys and I think their version of "Always on My Mind" is ace. Obviously, it's not a patch on Elvis' version, though.

I like Elvis but The Pet Shop version was very good as it benefited from the faster rhythm. I also preferred Andy Williams version of Can't Help Falling in Love over Elvis version. Sometimes you can change a version and improve it.

Not sure how different he is to any other X Factor fucker!

Managed to the nth degree - didn't write the songs (or did he?). Just sang. lived through one of the most socially tumultuous decades ever and said 'fuck all' about racism, equality, sexism.

Some corking tunes - in the ghetto, but as a man, fat man in a corset singing 'my way' at Caesars Palace pretty much sums him up.
