Aftermath of a car accident...

We were in an accident on Sunday when an arl fella went through a red light and we slammed into him.

Anyway, it looks like our car has been written off. I'm in the US so I'm sure it'll be different, but what's everyone's experiences with getting decent value in order to replace their motor?

We bought a 2013 with 50k about five months ago, and I don't really feel like paying out more or downgrading. What have people experienced being able to get like for like in these situations?

Also, like most folks, we're paying the car off monthly. What happens with the settlement you get? How does that work with the outstanding amount on a car loan?

Pretty sure we're going to get fucked either way as this is America and it seems to be what happens, but any advice would be appreciated...

EDIT: 50k miles on the clock, not dollars paid. Sheeeet.

Pretty sure you are too. The value you get will not truly be what the car is worth.

That said, seeing as you are in America - how does your neck feel today?

Are you a Republican and a member of the NRA? If so, then your options are to shoot the bastard or sue him for a ridiculous and disproportionately large sum of money.

If you're a normal person, then don't accept the first offer the insurance company make as they'll try and take the piss.
