I am buying a dog but want some advice.

I live in a reasonably sized house with a smallish garden but a massive field over next to my house, have a 5 year old daughter and a cat. I want a smallish dog.

Have enquired about Shelties and Pomskies soo far. Want a good natured dog and am willing to pay a grand.

King Charles Cavalier? Very affectionate, great with kids (although they can get a bit excited at times) and not too big.

I'll just copy a post I made earlier. Haven't changed my mind.

Boston Terrier.

Short haired and don't malt at all. Won't bark if it's left alone, or at all really, unless it hears an intruder or something. I've had mine since he was a pup and he probably barks less than 10 times a year.

Doesn't need hardly any exercise, 15 minutes a day would do it fine, though they obviously enjoy going out for longer.

I've had loads of different breeds - Afghan, German Shepherd, Neapolitan Mastiff, Doberman to name a few - and I'd never get another breed now. They are lovely dogs, sweet natured and funny as fuck.

They're small as well, even Rico wouldn't be scared of them! Honestly they're the best, if you're up in Liverpool, one of the best breeders in the country is in Croxteth park called Wildax. They breed Bostons and Boxers.

Our latest dog is an adult we got from them, she was one they used to breed other dogs and were happy to let her go to a decent home aged 4 as they wouldn't breed her again. Cost £200, but a puppy from them is a couple of grand, though you can get a non Wildax one cheaper. Worth a call if you're interested to see if they're getting rid of any adults.

Here are a few pics of mine. Fantastic dogs.

Get something that will eat the cat.

I have a Lab, he is awesome but they are fucking chewy, eat anything and everything. rugs, chesterfields, pillows, cushions, game controller, hilite pens (he had flourescent shit).

Rescue dog is the way to go, get one that has a decent temperment of course, we had a shitzu we rescued and it was one hell of a crochety dog but in the end we won her over.

Also had a huskie rescue dog, I didnt trust it, I am sure it had a lot of wolf in him, ended up giving him to a guy who did sled dog tours.

A couple of grand for a dog? Seriously people pay that?

Get to a rescue center and save one for nowt.

Yep. They'll have a wide range and will give as good a guarantee as a breeder will that the dog will be good with kids.

If breeding wasn't such an industry, there wouldn't be so many great dogs in shelters.

Chatting to someone that runs a 'doggy day care' business. I can't get my head around it. People used to not get dogs unless they were home/had time to have one, now people get them and outsource every aspect of owning a pet - someone looks after it, walks it (I know one family whose dog gets taken on holiday by their dog walker). Lazy bastards can't even be arsed washing their dogs either. Baffling. Get a dog or don't, look after it or don't get one.

Bizarre isnt it? Some people seem to get a dog as a fashion accessory, to show how hard they are or virtually any other reason except as a companion.

And the fucking prices they charge for 'pedigrees' is truely eye watering. When I was a kid, we always had an alsatian, usually 2. Now, they're called German Shepherds and interbred to fuck. I think 3 of the last 4 allies she had had fits and each breeder tried to blame her vet, for fuck's sake.

Last dog we had was a rescue dog. She were a nassie little thing but loyal. She couldnt stand other dogs but mellowed a bit when she was 15, either that or she just couldnt be bothered any more.

Not sure what's happened in the past few years but prices have nearly doubled. I'm thinking of getting a dog but the local rescues appear to have very few younger dogs in. And some breeds I wouldn't go near without having then as pups for training/socialising. But pedigrees seem to have doubled in price in the last 3 or 4 years. Even fucking cross breeds and going from £1500 in some breeds. Its a fucking cross, I don't care if the dad is from a champions line of X.
