Could obviously look at this in a negative way but if you want to look at it positively it really says something about how good Gomez is that we haven't looked nearly as solid since his injury.

 

Not saying our defense has been rubbish but a day like today's been coming for a bit. Gomez sometimes gets thought of as just "the one van Dijk makes look good" by opposition fans but I think it's evident that he's a genuine step above Matip and Lovren.

 

Just 21, too. It's easy to forget that. He's going to be a really, really important player for this club.

No Wijnaldum, no Gomez, no, Trent -- in their place the defence/midfield gets plugged with powder-puff players (Matip; Keita) or stop-gap solutions (Milner). Makes sense the record-breaking defensive unit is stopped in its track when 3 of the 6 are out of the team. Will be a big, big plus once he's back fit.

His form was absolutely on par with Van Dijk earlier in the season. He can’t come back soon enough
