Building your own home

Bit of a question for those who know about this sort of thing. I've been travelling the USA a bit recently and noticed how prevalent wooden houses are. They seem easier and cheaper to build, last at least a century and, in the North East USA, have no problems with weather conditions at least as bad as the UK. So why don't you see these in Britain?

They are becoming a lot more popular, partly due to shortages in brick supplies.

And the best bit of advice......ask your local builders merchant to recommend a builder. Dont go for the cheapest option, it will cost you more in the long run.

Spot on, definitely get opinions.

Most houses are wooden framed down this neck of the woods. Some steel frame or masonry block, but wooden frames are in the vast majority.

The company I work for builds and sells wooden frames and roof trusses. They get prefabricated in the factory, shipped out to site flat and put up by the builder at the other end. Flat pack housing.
