James Milner is....

I don't get the love in with Milner. Obviously he's a good solid pro who is ultra consistent but he's not a good enough central midfielder and does his best work in wider areas. He's been lucky with some of the stupid tackles he's thrown in too. But credit to Klopp and his backroom staff as both Milner and Henderson are solid proof about the team being far better than the sum of it's parts.

Amazing couple of years he's had.

Was a terrific left back, and then dug his heels in, at age 31, to say to Klopp that he wanted to be a midfielder in the highest-intensity side around.

Not only has he pulled it off, he looks better and better and his fitness is never an issue holding him back.

Milner is the perfect Klopp player. Milner WANTS to be dedicated to sport and fitness, it's a passion of his seemingly, and he gets the perfect chance to test himself in this team.

How long left on his contract?

Ummmm.

No.

Care to elaborate?

Well, firstly he's not playing as a central midfielder, he's left of the 3, where he's quite clearly good enough.

He has a ridiculous number of assists, and hardly gives the ball away. No sure what you're wanting from a player there.

As for his 'stupid tackles', if you're not referring to his ability to stop the opposition from getting close to our box, then you must be watching a different player.

Barney Ronay had a great article about Milner in The Guardian. The thrust was that it's not as if Milner has improved significantly, it's just that football and this team in particular have evolved to where his skillset and game intelligence are very useful.

Aye, the same is true of Oxlade Chamberlain and Firmino.

Fit lads love running, and running loads makes you even fitter. That's why this team only gets stronger, because fit players are getting even fitter, and teams just can't live with that.

Agreed. Seem to remember Milner and Firmino both finishing the 15/16 season very strongly.

I have been wrong about Milner, ... and Henderson... (and OX TBH)
I watched Milner & Hendo, graft and graft, and launch themselves to get a toe on stuff to break up play and win the ball back..
You put a flashy midfielder in there (Pogba) and you lose that.
They do exactly what is required of them..

Some of his tackles in European games have been near the knuckle but thanks to much better refereeing have gone unpunished, rightly and sometimes wrongly so. I feel he does his best creative stuff when he drifts wider in midfield,we don't play wingers in the traditional sense and formations are fluid and not static especially ours. Like I said earlier,a prime example of the squad being better than the sum of its parts.

Milner has always been brilliant in what Klopp calls the "half space". He used to cause havoc in that area with City by linking up with Silva. Most notably in that 3-2 game in 2013/14 when he came on at half time and completely changed the game in their favour.

City fan I know kept having a dig at Milner for joining us, "he left to play centre mid and win trophies, but he's playing left back and won fuck all, that's turned out well for him" etc.

Yes, yes it's turned out very well for him indeed.
