Chris's "award winning" Chippy on Rose Lane, Mossley Hill, was boss. Literally round the corner form where i grew up.

Think it won Echo Chippy of the year for two years running or something. Could be woeful now, but the fella who owned it (Chris) sounded like Stavros off Harry Enfield. Hilariously Greek.

Can confirm that it is still boss. There and Andy's chippy on Lark Lane do some of the best fish and chips going in south Liverpool.

Anyway, I'll let everyone go back to discussing the benefits of the Eurozone besides better chip shops.

Austerity is, of course, shit.  And there are plenty of stories like the one mentioned above.  But there are also some good stories in Ireland and it is undeniably in a better place than Greece.  So in that respect "slow and steady" beats "banging your hand on the table".

It is difficult to compare the peripheral countries in the Eurozone as they are all very different with different underlying reasons for their problems.  My only argument with Greece is that blatant corruption and evasion seems to be the root cause of their problems.  Try and get your head around the following:

"In 2010, the estimated tax evasion costs for the Greek government amounted to well over $20 billion per year."

But there are some people who think they shouldn't have to pay any price for this.

As it was 10, 20, 30, 40, etc years ago. Being in a better place than Greece seems a rather pathetic defence of austerity measures in Ireland.

Yes, there are some good stories for the rich. They have remained rich. Whilst -

The poor will pay the price as they always do. Greece have decided they've had enough of this fucking horrible neo-colonialism, hopefully Spain follow their lead later this year.

Nostalgia hit.

There was a decent Chinese on Allerton Road as well called the Golden Phoenix ( i think). Best ever crispy shredded chilli beef done in there.

I never defended austerity in Ireland, but for a non-rabble rouser like me I give credit to the government for the actions they have taken (or not taken).

You clearly have issues with the EU but people in Ireland have short memories regarding the amount of money that we have received from this project over the years.  It is run by a bunch of cunts for sure, but nothing's perfect is it.

You are very good at selecting depressing stories from a country you don't live in.  But I could do a random Google search and find some equally uplifting ones.

Anyway, this never started as a defence of austerity on my behalf so I don't want the conversation being steered that way.

Regarding another point you make, I'm not sure if Ireland was in a better place than Greece seven years ago but it certainly was in a fucking stinking hell hole of a place that it has thankfully emerged from.  However, there is still a lot more to do (people on hospital trolleys, child poverty etc).

Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt Adopt Greece

416.jpg

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are reportedly in the “final stages of authorisation” concerning the adoption of the Hellenic Republic of Greece.

Pitt said the cogs are already in motion, but the couple will wait until after their summer holidays before adding another eleven million, three hundred and five thousand, one hundred and eighteen people to the family.

The adoption could be only months away, Jolie suggested. “We have to decide whether it’s financially feasible moving the country to our home in the states or if we have hired a live-in nanny to mind the country at its current location,” she said.

Angelina has spoken in the past of her desire for an even larger family, and according to reports the latest edition will be their last adoption bid for at least five years.

“My Lawyers are in the process of getting an authorisation so I can spend some time with poor Greece. That’s standard operating procedure, basically they need to make sure the neglected European nation will adapt to me, Brad and the kids,” she said.

She added that the other children were excited about the good news: “They were ecstatic when I told them they would be getting 11,305,118 brothers and sisters.

It is believed Angelina is keen for everything to be done officially and has been in close contact with IMF and EU officials.

“The European Union guys have been so supportive. We really couldn’t have asked for a more obliging bunch of people. They really wanted to see Greece go to a good home,” she added.

I gave you some facts as well.

What does the government deserve credit for? How exactly are the majority of people benefiting from austerity? What has improved for the majority of people to describe the last few years as "it certainly was in a fucking stinking hell hole of a place that it has thankfully emerged from"? Have public services improved? Have wages increased?

Your last line sounds like something David Cameron would say. Pretending that you're even heading in the right direction.

You describe "austerity" as if it is the only thing that is happening here.  It is a nice catchy buzzword that all the loony left wingers like to use over here.  The problem with these people is they have no solution other than to bang their hands and talk about wealth taxes and the like.  It's back of a cigarette packet economics and I'm grateful that they aren't in power.  They refuse to acknowledge any good that is done.  I work my bollocks off and they would tax me even more - even though workers already pay a marginal tax rate of 50/51%.  It is a fact in Ireland that a sizeable minority of people don't need to work because of the ridiculous benefits they can claim.  The left want to increase these even more at the expense of the working man.

As a country, in the mid- to late- 00s we were spending way beyond our means.  Something had to give.  This was nothing to do with the EU, this is simple Maths.  Our public sector pay and welfare rates were through the roof when the crash happened.  Granted the bank guarantee and subsequent bailout (which were European led) clearly exacerbated the problem but even way before that we had serious issues as a result of a clueless administration who were buying votes with ludicrous concessions and were wholly reliant on property based taxes to fund the economy.

Yeah, think we're done. You've gone full Tory. Never go full Tory.

You cite tax evasion in Greece as something to criticise their current, and new, government for, but do you care about tax avoidance in the UK and other such countries?

Okay tax avoidance is not illegal, but do you know enough about the tax laws in each country to say one is worse than the other?

At the end end the day the ones at the top will do all they can to horde their money whether that's by illegal or immoral methods, I applaud any government trying to stand against that and stand up for the majority working class.

Greece is a basket-case economy. How anyone thought by joining the EU they'd miraculously turn into an olive-skinned version of a BMW factory is beyond me. Especially as the government was too shit scared of it's own shipping industry to, you know, actually bother with taxing them at all.

Anyhow. Greece have crashed their economy onto the rocks Ho hum. The EU have been disgraceful throughout the whole farrago: Fucking Merkel, Hollande and Junkers -  hectoring and shaking down a bleeding a Greece that' s already begging on it's knees, like masochistic schoolmasters. as if it's only about the money Shameful shit.

Rather than kicking them when they're down. The EU should be putting together a plan on how Greece can grow its way out of it's current predicament. It's a country with enviable natural resources: get acres of solar farms built there and use the proceeds to pay down the debts without putting pensioners on their arses and the working poor on the streets.

Some helpful information there on how sabotaging someone's economy can be quite lucrative.

If the 1% were going to have to pay for failings in regulation, crimes or economic fuck-ups with the imaginary numbers on a computer we now call currency, this would get sorted in no time at all.

It's transfer of wealth from the many to the few. Just as it has been ever since Milton's dickheads spread forth and populated.

Left-leaning governments cannot be allowed to be even given the opportunity to succeed, for if they do then the house of cards comes down. The vastly wealthy and powerful would rather see a country on fire than see a socialist government given a chance, and have shown it again and again.

Fuck off. We've had austerity and so should everyone else.

Where do you think the banks were getting their money? Offering 110% mortgages and allowing people to release equity in their homes to buy cars and go on holidays.

And yet, even though we "spent beyond our means", we ("normal" people) still have/had to repay the banks and bail the cunts out 'cause private unsecured investors wanted their money back....because Europe said so!

Was reading some good stuff on Iceland recently (not the supermarket). Instead of bailing out the banks they let them fail and put all the bankers in jail, their economy's on the mend now.

So they basically did the right thing. I guess our problem was our banks are so big the repercussions so wide that letting them fail would have been too painful. I don't mind bailing them out. But not sending one single of the fuckers to jail has just made them think they are more bullet proof than ever.
