I saw the thread bumped and feared the worst.

I didn’t quite love him but he was a big feature of my teenage listening and I find myself surprised by how affected I feel about his cancer diagnosis

Never listened to much of his music but bizarrely remember him in an episode of Two and a Half Men with Charlie Sheen.

I wish him well though.

Got his autobiography last Xmas & really enjoyed it , was very vague about his clash with Stephen Stills though.

The one thing you learn about musicians.  No matter how anti-establishment, how edgy, how punky, how radical, when it comes down to it they’re all just fucking pantomime dames doing a turn.

I think they ask a few weeks/months before if you would accept it, as they don't want the publicity of someone turning it down. 

So once I heard his name I knew he would accept it.

Although I agree with your point generally, it's not fair to lump everyone in. The likes of George Melly & Bowie turned honours down & plenty will not have been offered them for some of the reasons you've listed.
