I imagine one of those was directed at me and I won’t lose a second of sleep on guessing what’s there, but I assume it’s yet more incorrect, blinked, bad faith, bad take, stupid, idiotic, obsequious lickspittle  nonsense.

Gnasher, you are profoundly stupid, I mean this, you are one of the stupidest people I’ve ever had the misfortune to engage with.

I wish you all the misery you wish upon yourself.

All this from a person responding to a post he can't even see.

That's a bit of a stretch.

"Genghis Khan would have loved the EE; Bach would have opposed it. The Defence rests."

Is it? You really think Orwell would've not wanted British independence?

Cracking quote from Spanner that though, beats the usual crew throwing up WWF wrestling clips and monkeys.

Spanner. Supports the eu, calls other posters stupid names, uses George Orwell to make his point. Bruce is not having the best of days, needs to sack his researcher.

"British independence"?

Turn it down a notch, Nige!

Every Member State of the EU is an independent sovereign nation. Plenty of people who consider themselves patriots - and who therefore want what's best for their country - support membership of the EU. The idea that everyone who supports EU membership is unpatriotic is as lazy and false as the idea that everyone who opposes EU membership is racist.

Yeah fair enough.

That link is really not convincing. Obviously, it can't offer any insight into Orwell's opinion of an organisation that came into being 9 years after he died. The best it can offer is Orwell's criticism of a book (which I'd never heard of) called "Union Now". The ideas in that book were significantly different from the EU and I can't easily find any evidence that it had any significant influence on the founding of the EU.

Orwell was patriotic for a land he thought could/should exist, not the one that did.

One where the working class could be rightly proud and share in the collective efforts and rewards of industry etc, democratic socialism fully realised effectively.

Would he have been a fan of the EU, perhaps if he saw the collectivist possibilities of the voting blocks and the opportunity to influence hundreds of millions of people collectively towards the common good, one of the central ideas.

Would he be a fan of how it is now, bloated and lacking real focus and purpose probably not, but he’d see the potential, but also the negatives and where they could lead, but also mindful of what they protect from.

That’d be my take on it anyway.

’The Lion & The Unicorn’ would be a good place to start.

If you're still banging on about Orwell and bizarre made up little fantasy's you could of course write your own book Spanner.

I'd suggest 'Down and out in London and Paris, volume 2' where you drive around both cities in a gas guzzling expensive car patronising and showing zero amounts of empathy for the poor who earn less than the minimum wage.

Your book would sell half a dozen copies before retailing for 50 pence in the bargain bucket of most shit bookstores.

Yeah I agree, the link is not really convincing at all although a lot of socialists around that time had a slightly more sceptical veiw of Europe than the those on the center of British politics who embrace it with open arms today, as I've said previously Attlee, Foot, Bevan, Benn etc were all against a collective Europe and that's some heavyweight list.

We all know Orwell went to Spain to fight fascism and often toured Europe so its a bit of a stretch imo to label him as anti European as such. He would surely have been against Clem Atlee giving Easten Europeans the cold shoulder after the second world war, although he also hated the  European pageantry of the time, he once wrote it'd be hard for England to succumb to fascism as we Brits mock and laugh at the upper class and their pompous military parades. I'd say the jury's well and truly out on Orwell and the EU, I only brought him up in response to Spanners bizarre use of one his quotes from the book 1984.

The only thing the EU are protecting us from at the moment are Afgany refugees..

'Desperate food manufacturers are pleading with the government to be able to call upon prisoners to solve a labour crisis blamed on the double blow of Brexit and Covid.

The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, which represents butchers, abattoirs and processors, said it had a call set up with the Ministry of Justice on Monday that would explore how its members could recruit more current inmates and ex-offenders.

To fill vacancies companies are trying to draft in prisoners via a scheme that allows inmates to undertake paid work on day release. They are also contacting charities for ex-servicemen and women to try to drum up staff.

Tony Goodger of the meat suppliers’ association said some of its members already had inmates on the release on temporary licence programme working for them and found them to be an asset. It had also been in contact with the Career Transition Partnership, which helps former service personnel into work, and had been able to point some of them to members with job vacancies; however, the “numbers are low”, he said “Much of the food industry is facing a recruitment crisis,” said Goodger. “The advice we have received from the Home Office is that the UK’s domestic labour force should take priority.

However hard we and many of the members have tried, staffing remains a challenge.” Goodger said that last week he had contacted HMP Hollesley Bay in Suffolk, but the rehabilitation officer said there was such a big demand for inmates “we’ve reached our quota and we are not allowed to let any more out to go to work”.
