Former Labour MP Chris Leslie, who is part of the Independent Group, says he supports calls for another public vote - but not a general election.

He tells the BBC News Channel: "If you think that Brexit is complicated, just throw a general election in here to completely throw everything into chaos. Let's get a grip of this situation.

"There is a route out of it. The prime minister's deal could go back to the public.

"We could put a customs union, single market back to the public. Ultimately we have to give people the chance to look at this and say do we want to proceed or think again?"

More like you’re terrified of losing your seat, you Gimp.

He's right. A GE at best will be a hung parliament. It's a ridiculous idea that could lumber us with a headbanger for 3 years beyond the current parliament and tied up with a Trumpian America.

The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of sneaking out an impact assessment that suggests a trade deal between the EU and Vietnam will “increase the welfare of UK households” and boost UK exports to the country by nearly £500m per year.

The party notes that the international trade secretary, Liam Fox, has signed only eight trade deals that will maintain the relationships the UK currently has as an EU member, once it leaves the bloc.

Its Brexit spokesman, Tom Brake, has said:

Today, at one minute past 11pm, was supposed to be trade deal day for Liam Fox – the day he would roll-over all our EU trade deals.

This was the day when his vision of a buccaneering Britain would reach fruition. We would sign off trade deals worth tens of billions of pounds with countries across the globe.

Unfortunately, his vision has collided with hard reality. Even when he gets the deal signed with Vietnam, the number still remain fewer than 10.

On a day in which the government has witnessed yet another embarrassing defeat of the prime minister’s deal, they have clearly decided today is a good day to bury bad news.

Fox has failed. He should pay the price and walk.

As an EU member, the UK benefits from trade deals that cover more than 70 countries.

One theory is better an extension than May's Brexit this is argued by a QC who works with the DUP and ERG. Full article below.

Key points:

  • A short Article 50 extension of under 3 months would make no practical difference and fear of one is not a reason for backing the deal.
  • A long extension of 21 months would have the same practical result as the “implementation” period in the deal, except the UK would be much better off than under the deal because we would still have a vote and representation in EU institutions and the European Parliament.
  • Unlike the deal, we would be free to leave on 1st January 2021 without being trapped in the “backstop” Protocol.
  • Our financial liabilities during the 21 month extension would be the same as under the deal, but unlike the deal, we would have no obligations afterwards.
  • Unlike under the deal, we would not be subject to indefinite ECJ jurisdiction after 2020.
  • We would not be subject to EU state aid controls after 2020, nor to Commission and ECJ “long tail” powers after that date.
  • We could line up international trade deals to come into force from 1st January 2021. Under the deal, we could not do this because the backstop Protocol and the commitments on tariffs we have made in the Political Declaration mean we could not assure negotiating partners that we would be in a position to implement deals with them.
  • We would have more time to prepare for a “no deal” Brexit, enhancing our negotiating power with the EU, and also more time to develop and deploy alternative customs control methods on goods crossing the Irish border.
  • An Article 50 extension is obviously being used as a ‘Trojan horse’ by Remainers and referendum-deniers who want to reverse Brexit. But Brexit supporters should not be swayed by that into supporting Theresa May’s deal which would poison Brexit and create a situation so bad that calls to re-enter the EU would grow in order at least to have a vote on all the areas where we will be rule-takers from Brussels

https://www.conservativehome.com/platform/2019/03/martin-howe-it-is-far-better-to-risk-extending-article-50-than-to-accept-mays-bad-deal.html

But all of this is possible only if there is no deal, which neither government nor the parliamentary majority wants and intends to let happen, and the EU will also help prevent it if at all possible. Without the May deal and the backstop, the likeliest scenario is a longer extension during which a new agreement will be negotiated with the EU, and indicative votes point to the customs union as a preferred option. And customs union would mean that the UK would not be able to do its own trade deals.

Virtually every other realistic option other than no deal is worse for them than May's deal.

I agree, a softer Brexit than May's was always on the cards if it was given time in parliament. I always thought No Deal was going to be stopped by Parliament. Just posting you some of their ideas.

Is he bollocks. A general election is the only reasonable course of action at this point

Agreed . A public vote first .

The Tories need to own this shitefest.

An election now risks an even more reactionary Tory government getting a majority with Johnson or Gove in charge

Good points. If I was Corbyn, I wouldn’t want to be a PM right this very moment.
