Sorry, wheres the two dms again?

They don't need to be Mascherano's.

Big tackles look ace but they're an outdated concept in this cauldron of fannies and refereeing zealots.

For me, DM's are about selflessness, stamina and intelligence. I think Milner, Allen and Henderson have that in spades.

Our defence isn't that bad, it's quite alright. Our defensive record would be a lot, lot better if teams were too scared to commit numbers to attacks. Last season we found that other teams were happy to leave defenders 1 on 1 with our attackers because we were so listless up front.

Chelsea have a great defence, no doubt, but part of their strength is that the opposition always leave 4 men behind to try and stop Hazard and Costa from ripping them to pieces.

Hopefully next season we'll see a return to that with Firmino and Benteke and Markovic, or something along those lines.

Why are you picking Markovic as opposed to Firmino? Oh, I see why.

But, even if we pick Markovic, I'd be careful about writing him off if I was you, could end up looking a bit silly this time next year.

To be honest, I'm fast losing my patience with people on this forum who paint this black picture. I think if we went and signed Ronaldo tomorrow there'd be a group of yous whining that we should have signed Messi. Weird. Tiring and weird.

This is quite simply bullshit and doesn't help your argument one bit. Tends to suggest that you don't have much faith in your own opinions so you have to invent hypothetical ones for your opponents to give you something to talk about.

To be honest, I was concerned about Markovic at the start since he didn't even look good in his youtube highlights videos! And if you can't look good in those selective clips then you're not likely to be that good in my shallow opinion.

I'd be happy to offload him, he's not really shown any serious potential although I wonder how much of that is down to be playing as a wing back.

I prefer to judge people on results. I have never seen Firmino play a full game of football .

I've seen enough of Markovic to know he'd nowhere near good enough yet and whilst Benteke looked very good for Villa in spells I'm not convinced he's a Liverpool player. On the other hand I've seen plenty of Hazard and Costa , enough to know they are lethal.

You just come on peddling a load of waffle and then accuse people of whining because they don't share your blind optimism. I am actually quite happy at the moment with our dealings and its a lot better than I expected but I'm under no illusion how tough its going to be to get a top 4 spot next season

He isn't gonna get enough games is he?

Where does he fit in a strong Liverpool team?

I can see him going out on loan somewhere

Quite likely

I'm all for investing in talented kids but we paid £20m or something ludicrous . Its just silly money for someone with so little experience. It's not fair on the player. must be hard enough moving to England , adjusting to the PL and dealing with the weight of expectation at Liverpool without a massive price tag round your neck

Berger was ok, that was about it, the odd screamer he used to score papered over the fact that he wasn't very consistent. You're right that if the forums had been around then, he would've caused a lot of arguments.

Ged got him playing left wing instead of up front in his first season and was brilliant. Then he got a couple bad injuries and he was shit.

I loved Berger but he was very inconsistent and was in and out of the side a lot. I can remember a lot of moaning and groaning about him from the crowd (not always a fair way to judge a player of course) and like others have said if the internet had been as big back then there'd be a load of people moaning about him for not doing enough.

He was a bit like Luis Garcia in that there were games where he didn't look like he fancied it or he wouldn't get stuck in but then out of nothing he'd smash the ball in the top corner and it didn't matter.

I'd take those less desirable qualities though if it also meant goals. Markovic and Balotelli can do all of the shithouse stuff brilliantly but they don't get away with it because they also have no end product, a bit like most of our team at the moment.

Paddy Berger scored 9 goals a season in 3 of his first 4 years with us. A midfielder with that sort of contribution would be immense today.

How anyone could argue he wasn't boss amazes me.

Same as Benayoun. Three seasons scoring 11,9, and 9, respectively.

But that should be par (yes, I went there) for an attacking midfielder, surely?  The fact that we've had years of substandard players in that position shouldn't elevate what are pretty ordinary stats.  We should expect at least 35 goals a season out of our midfield and defence, and another 35 out of our attackers, even in an average season.
