Reds Dig French left back?

Reports in France today claim Liverpool are in talks with PSG over their talented young left back Lucas Digne.

French newspaper La Parisien report that the Reds have made an enquiry about the 21 year old who is unsettled due to a lack of playing time behind first choice left back Maxwell. Digne has been linked with LFC regularly over the past couple of years and is very highly rated in his homeland.

The Reds need urgent help at both full back spots as young Spanish pair Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno both failed to impress in their debut season in England, Jose Enrique spends more time posting selfies on twitter than he does on the field while Glen Johnson will leave when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Digne would appear to fit the bill nicely. He joined PSG from Lille two years ago for £10m and has eight caps for France, but with the European Championships at the end of the season he cannot afford to be sat on the bench. His situation is not too dissimilar to that which resulted in Mamadou Sakho making the switch from the French capital to Merseyside two summers ago.

Meanwhile, it's claimed that Dani Alves’ decision to remain at Barca may lead to Manchester United reigniting their interest in Reds’ target Nathaniel Clyne. Liverpool recently had a £10m bid rejected for the England full back and it looked like they were the only horse in the race after United dropped their interest in him.

Southampton are holding out for nearer £15m and if United’s reported change of heart is accurate then that will help drive the price up. Will the Reds take United on or will they walk away and blame a lack of Champions League football?

Burnley’s Kieran Trippier could be a fall back option. He’s been heavily linked with Spurs this summer and has a reported buy out clause of just £3.5m.

"Come and swap PSG's bench for our bench"

No wonder they're queueing up to sign for Liverpool.

We should persist with Moreno at left back. In his first season here we saw glimpses of quality. OK, granted we need to see more, but replacing him would be a poor use of funds, given other priorities. We were bad last season, and there was a lot of upheaval all around the side. This is not exactly the best environment for a new player to come in and be at his best. But there's no way I'm writing off Moreno at this early stage.

Keep Moreno, get a settled central defensive pairing, sign a good right back (a much bigger need than left back), then play a midfield diamond - someone protecting it all at the base, Coutinho doing his thing behind the strikers, two all action midfielders in between them, and two strikers who offer pace, movement and goals.

Get that right and we will do well this season.

If we can get a good quality coach who's actually got a clue defensively then the likes of Moreno, Manquilo, Sakho and Skrtel can be an adequate enough back four (maybe with a right back coming in) backed up by Wisdom, Flanagan, Toure and Lovren. Not brilliant by any means but enough not to be conceding 50 goals a season.

We need a DM and strikers. Getting a proper DM more than anything will improve us defensively.

I think we should not give up yet on Moreno,. He was far from useless last season in a defensive set up that was shite, Too many errors yes but he's young and can learn.

He was more than useless last Season.  A total liability more like.

Our scouts should be all over this lad at Lyon. Only 20, can play in loads of defensive positions, is agile and a goal threat.

After the shit you have endorsed over the years,to say i am a tad bit sceptical is an understatement. How about we just sign someone proven in the positions we need, and that doesn't necessarily mean premier league proven.

At a club who are beyond useless in the transfer market, the left back is a particular jinx. Premier League proven (Enrique, Ziege), Premier League proven and English (Konchesky, Dicks), promising and young (Moreno, Vignal, Traore, Insua), flash in the pan (Riise), good but perma crocked (Aurelio). Rather than waste any more money we should just work with Moreno rather than add someone else to the promising and young category, or even worse Premier League proven and English.
