Would have waited towards the end of the season before giving him a deal and certainly wouldn't have given him 2 years. He's 34.

So

Even if he only stays one year and decides to move on for more games or to finish at Leeds etc. He deserves better than a one year deal.

You can't run a club like that, he's not exactly going to be broke if he has to leave on a free transfer.

This is a very good move.

Apart from signing McAllister when he was in his mid-30s, we've always let go of our most experienced players as soon as they've said they'd prefer to play more regularly. With Milner, he'll push himself to continue being a regular with the backing of the manager and the club, but he also knows that he can't realistically expect to be playing week-in week-out. In addition to that, his influence off the pitch cannot be underestimated as I think it has a huge impact on what he and the others do ON the pitch.

This 100%. Mad how we´ve all turned into sporting directors these days! Not gonna be breaking the bank one way or another, and if he doesn´t see out the contract, there will be a transfer fee coming in for him. Hopefully, he´ll be here til 2022 and leave even more of an imprint on the lads coming through. Chrimbo´s come early for us reds this year.
