Old news, but quite interesting.

Nixon Proposed Using A-Bomb In Vietnam War Published: March 1, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md., Feb. 28— A few weeks before ordering an escalation of the Vietnam War, President Nixon matter-of-factly raised the idea of using a nuclear bomb. His national security adviser, Henry A. Kissinger, quickly dissuaded him.

Mr. Nixon's abrupt suggestion, buried in 500 hours of tapes released today at the National Archives, came after Mr. Kissinger had presented a variety of options for stepping up the war effort, among them attacking power plants and docks, in an April 25, 1972, conversation in the Executive Office Building in Washington.

''I'd rather use the nuclear bomb,'' Mr. Nixon responded.

''That, I think, would just be too much,'' Mr. Kissinger replied.

''The nuclear bomb. Does that bother you?'' Mr. Nixon asked. ''I just want you to think big.''

The following month, Mr. Nixon ordered the biggest escalation of the war since 1968.

In a 1985 interview, Mr. Nixon acknowledged that he had considered ''the nuclear option.'' He told Time magazine then: ''I rejected the bombing of the dikes, which would have drowned one million people, for the same reason that I rejected the nuclear option. Because the targets presented were not military targets.''

There was a programme on BBC4 the other night called The Race for the World's first Atomic Bomb, I recorded it & watched it last night, it's about the American project to build the first atom bomb at Los Alamos, well worth a watch on the iPlayer if you're interested.

I'm a wee bit obsessed by nuclear bombs I think, I know they're a bunch of cunts but they look really cool, here's the first test in 1945.

Visited Japan this year and spend a few days in Hiroshima.

Went to the peace museum and piece park, museum was graphic in its story telling of the consequences of the bomb the dead, injured (both then and in future years) and life afterwards.

The devastation caused was horrific kids just burnt to a crisp other photos showing charred bodies both alive and dead.

I had told my 10 year old about what happened before we went so he had an idea of what he was about to see, young people have such different perspectives on this, he wrote in comments book at end 'so why did you bomb pearl harbour'..

As part of trip also spoke to some survivors who told shocking stories about that day and the horrors, but none blamed USA for it.

Even seeing what I saw there I still think it was the right thing to do, I have seen nothing that would convince me the Japanese would have surrendered quickly, the loss of life on both sides from an Invasion would be too costly

Do you think the Japanese would have dropped it on us if they'd had one?

On the BBC website the other day there was an article about the growing numbers of Japanese who refuse to believe comfort women existed, and some text books don't reflect the reality of their involvement in the war.

Interesting comparing your attitude in other threads to this one. If you provoke someone don't be surprised when they kill you.

Isis massacre civilians doesnt mean we have to. I thought we were meant to be more civilised and that was what separated us?

Read that book and tell me that the bombing was not justified. The Japs were utter evil cunts and treated others particularly the Chinese equally as bad as anything Hitler did to the Jews.

At least the German people have the decency to acknowledge the horrors that were  perpetrated in their name. Most of Japans atrocities have been wiped from cultural existence.

They would of fought to the last man during a land invasion because their sense of honour is legendary as a culture but i don't think Tojo would of nuked Britain or America for fear of reprisal above anything else. No country barre America is mad enough to do what they did, the way they somehow portray it to this day as an act of great heroism is deeply offensive.

They just have head chopping off competitions instead.

Do you feel better about it by being racist and demonising entire peoples as therefore somehow logically worthy of dropping nukes on them or are you just rubbing salt on fleshless nuclear wounds by tryna justify it and make clear youd do it again tomorrow? Just wanderin

I'm not being racist or demonising entire peoples by saying that the Japs were horrendous murdering bastards during the war. If it was 1945 and my lad was in the navy and they were thinking of a land invasion of Japan I would thank the lord a bomb ended that possibility.
