So I am off to South America soon and I need a decent camera to capture some images from Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want more than 12 pixels. It also needs to be easy to use because I can't be arsed with the faff of something dead complicated.

What do you suggest camera wankers?

If you're prepared to up your budget a little Amazon have the Sony RX100 for £289.

Got the missus one around 18 months ago, fantastic little camera. Easy to use and the image quality is great.

I have the RX100 and it's great, but if you think you would use a bigger zoom (so you don't get eaten by a lion)  then the HX50 is on Amazon for £165.

I'm no expert but I'd definitely go for something bigger than 12 pixels.  To inform your buying decision, here's a picture of Machu Picchu at 12 pixels resolution:

I realise this may be a little small and lack definition for our older viewers, or those with less than perfect vision, so here it is enlarged by 100x:

Truly breathtaking.

What is that camera like for night photography?

Bump.

I'm looking to get into photography. I tried to do it about 2 years ago and ended up making the mistake of buying a EOS 500D with all the trimmings. Felt like a dickhead whenever I took it out as I had no idea how to use the thing and all the shots came out blurry whenever I tried anything other than auto.

So, any suggestions on a basic (smallish camera) with numerous lens options that I can slowly upgrade as I learn? I had an EOS M100 for a bit but found it a bit meh.

I have a DSLR and its great when you have learned how to use it. Anyone who says phone cameras are as good or compact cameras are as good is an idiot.

If you want something smaller try mirrorless cameras etc

Obviously dont buy from currys and shop around
