Dry January

This seems to be a 'thing' now, and like the first person to grow a beard, get a sleeve tattoo and listen to Mumford & Sons I'm annoyed because I've been doing it for years.

In fact ever since a mate of mine told me he was doing it and I believed him...took me 14 yrs to work out he was lying and had never done it.

So, are you doing it? I'm going till April apart from one day off to have a mates 50th piss up.

I'm gonna do it, just for curiosity's sake as I've been perennially feeling like shit lately. Gonna go to yoga everyday, eschew the piss, substitute it for a fuck load of water and see what difference it makes. Plus, I wanna see if I really miss it.

If you so much as begin to whine about not having any ale money at any point over the coming weeks, I'll put it down to spending £160 on an army coat.

It's fine, I always rob a few charity boxes at Christmas to sort me out for January. Getting the piss out of my army coat will be the main problem.

I drink about once every 3 months anyway, so after a couple of nights out over xmas I'm always happy enough to leave it until my birthday (St pats).

The Islamic Positive Thread is that way

If you find it THAT hard to go a few weekends off the ale, maybe you should get a hobby?

EDIT: Not addressed at anyone in particular. Just an observation.

Most hobbies don't happen between say 8pm and 12pm on a Saturday night for example. If you are single like me, then staying in on a weekend evening is a bit dull. I mean, I do it sometimes, but I'm not really into it.

I hardly ever go out anyway and I drink in moderation at home, Christmas is an exception.  Won't be doing it because it's not a significant difference to my normal habits and I don't see the point.  I'm not proving anything to myself by not having a couple of nice cold beers on Saturday whilst I watch the unmentionable, I'm just depriving myself of one of the few relatively cheap pleasures that I spend my time working for.

Seriously, fuck the pub off. Learn a language, join a salsa class, a pottery class, a creative writing class, play badminton. It's where all the attractive women with an IQ higher than a walnut are hanging out. Turn your life into a Hugh Grant film, it is possible.

There are plenty of hobbies and interests that you can pursue an any hour you choose. What it boils down to IMO is our culture, society and our lives have conditioned us to think "I should be out, it's a Saturday night". Once you get over that its not a big deal at all. I'd rather pick what I want to do than go through the painful, expensive groundhog day of mild alcoholism.

'Mild alcoholism', but you're not judging right? Each to their own. I respect your decision. If I don't want to drink I don't, if I do, I do. I don't have a problem with drinking, but socially it is a part of my life.

Well I'm speaking from my own experience, so sorry if it came across as labeling anyone who ever drinks as an alcho. It's when people (myself and friends I have discussed it with) 'need' to go out rather than want to that it becomes a bit of a problem. Like they can't enjoy doing anything else just because they're not out. It's just a time slot like any other. And my comments were aimed more towards people who find it so hard just to sit in for a few weekends like its climbing Everest. We should all be able to socialise without alcohol.

I can't speak for your friends about that, but for me, it's a social need rather than an alcohol need. If there are viable alternatives I'll often choose them, but I do enjoy going out and having a laugh. Much more than I would a salsa class or a pottery class. I wouldn't mind a game of badminton or squash, but nobody really plays that on a Saturday evening for example.

It is a cultural thing I agree, and I think the next generation don't seem to be into it anywhere near as much as my generation and the generations before were.
