The shitness of modern football

Er, no. Just no!

The game's lawmakers will discuss a request to increase half-time intervals from 15 minutes to 25 so that football can introduce Super Bowl-style entertainment midway through matches.

The money-spinning idea came from CONMEBOL, the South American governing body who believed it would benefit their competitions, such as the Copa Libertadores, the final of which will be played between Palmeiras and Flamengo this Saturday.

Tweaking the laws would enable English football to likewise introduce extravagant half-time shows, such as live music midway through the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, if it wished.

Lawmakers IFAB will meet on Thursday for their Annual Business Meeting, chaired by world governing body FIFA.

The agenda for the meeting does not mention Law 7 - the section detailing how long half time may last - but Sportsmail understands it will be discussed at the end of the virtual gathering.

It seems unlikely that CONMEBOL's request will be backed, however, with IFAB's advisory panels having already expressed their concerns that a longer period of inactivity could increase the risk of players picking up injuries.

The current laws of the game state 'players are entitled to an interval at half-time, not exceeding 15 minutes'. A similar attempt to increase the length to 20 minutes in 2009 was unsuccessful.

FIFA were behind that push but supporters bashed it as a blatant attempt to commercialise the game and fill pockets.

CONMEBOL said their intention was to improve the spectacle for supporters, saying the television broadcast of half-time shows is greatly received in other sports around the world.

The federation are understood to have even claimed the extra time would enable coaches to better prepare their players tactically for the second half, thereby improving the quality of the football on show.

Yet the other consideration is how much more money there would be to make from this extension, as evidenced by American football's extravaganza each year.

Half-times in the NFL tend to last around 12 minutes. In the Super Bowl, however, they can last up to 30 minutes.

Fuck.

Right.

Off.

Why don't they just add shoulder pads and helmets to the players 'uniforms.'

They would if enough money was offered for it.  Money has truly ruined the game now.

That half time shite will happen, the super league will happen.  £££

The vast majority of people have shown they're happy to put up with VAR and have asked for this shite.

I mean if we're happy to have the way we celebrate goals being completely ruined, what difference does a longer half time & some Superbowl style razzmataz make? The horse has bolted.

Didn’t we have this shite for a season or so when Sky started with the games. It’s a knockout blow-ups in club colours and cheerleaders and fireworks. There was a reason it stopped - it’s because fans despised it.

1992. The cheerleaders were called the Sky Strikers. I liked them....

Them not postponing is definitely part of the shitness of modern football.

But someone from sky talking about it being for the fans is a bit rich when they move matches around for TV all the time without giving a solitary fuck about how it affects fans getting to and from matches.

I know it won't happen but I'd love to see the whole structure collapse, Champions League, Premier League, UEFA, FIFA, the FA and Sky etc. all to fucking implode.

People will still just keep swallowing the bullshit though, paying over to odds to shit TV companies, paying fortunes for shit football tops and paying mental ticket prices.

The whole game is a parcel of shite now, totally fucking ruined from top to bottom.

The TV money is the only reason not to delay the start.

Still, Jeff Stelling has announced that this is his last season, so maybe he feels confident to call out shitness when he sees it.

VAR makes watching football thoroughly unenjoyable, in my opinion. I watched some of the Euros in the summer and thought it was rubbish. I’m glad I don’t go anymore because I wouldn’t bother celebrating goals, and by the time they’ve watched replays, the moment is lost.

All this over the top liberal stuff is only going to create more division & more working class people will move to the right.

The people who come up with all this shite don't live in the real World but unfortunately those who are getting it rammed down their throat at every turn, do. The real World where paying bills & buying clothes for your kids are a lot more important than this gender pish, which in reality affects about 0.01% of the population.

Player of the match? Fuck off.

Is it really necessary to have a token bird on every football show? Even on the BBC full time show, you got 2 female presenters. Just seems so forced and frankly, out of place.

Normally on this type of stuff I really don't care that much (i.e. I'm very Liberal on social issues - who gives a shit if they're female it'll be the same ill informed clap trap as anyone else), but one product of trying to include people of all backgrounds results in is a significant increase of people from London and the South East due to geographic distribution of ethnic minority populations. Basically regional representation is being sublimated for other considerations, but it does mean there are now a lot of shows that sound like they are being broadcast from a local London station.

The media have always had issues with this, but it feels like it has increased as an issue recently or perhaps its just started to grate on me more.
