I have barely heard more than two or three "rock" (it's a massive genre, I know) tunes in ten years that I enjoyed. I once heard a definition of great as music as anything that has either balls or soul, but preferably both: I hear so little "rock" music that has either, but there's almost none that has real soul. I admit it's not a genre I explore much these days, but I'm familiar with most well know stuff and it all just leaves me cold. That said, there were two lads on Jools Holland last week who were fucking boss on just guitar and drums. The last thing I heard that was as enjoyable as them was The Dead Weather on there doing Cut Like a Buffalo.

I think The National Anthem is one of their best ever songs. The bass is fucking brilliant and I love the jazz improvisation stuff on there from the horns too.

I agree wholeheartedly with that, i think i posted national anthem on the ace bass thread, it's brilliant.

As this isn't an amnesty thread i'd like to proclaim most of you as counts and stress again that radiohead are over-rated. good yes but fuck me not the way you depressive fuckers prattle on about them.

Oasis piss on them from a great height.

Radiohead are band for middle aged emo's

Oasis are a band for drinking and wanking into peoples pockets.

Would that be Royal blood you're referring to? The two guys on Jools Holland I mean.

It was a group called Slaves and the tune was called "Hey". I've just listened to a recorded version and it doesn't sound anywhere near as fresh as it did live though.

It absolutely amazes me that so many people who listen to a lot of music listen to very little that's new and will return to the same albums and artists over and over again for years on end. Don't get me wrong, I have favourites that I like to go back to, but the overwhelming bulk of what I'm listening to at any given time is new to me.

Depends on what music you like surely?

I mostly listen to old stuff but then I like Blues and Southern rock and there isnt much new stuff about thst doesn't sound like somebody copying old artists. The only album I listen to from the last two years is Gregory Porters album

Pete Doherty, despite being a complete knobhead, is one of the best songwriters of the past 10 years or so and Libertines should have become a better group than the Arctic Monkeys but didn't due to the aforementioned knobheadedness

The Rolling Stones should have split up after Exile on Main Street

Beck's Odelay should be much higher on the lists of all-time great records

Cat Stevens is much better than people remember and Father & Son is actually a good record destroyed by boy bands

Shaun Ryder isn't the greatest English poet since Yeats but he can still produce an intelligently twisted lyric better than most lyricists since Lennon

I don't really get Radiohead and sometimes think they are mostly a cooler version of Coldplay

Probably the above should be on the Amnesty thread

Oh yeah, and Imagine is actually one of John Lennon's worst songs (although that's still pretty good in relative terms)

Not a lot wrong with any of that.

Noels quite funny but Liam is, was, and has always been a twat of the absolute highest order.

Other way round. Liam is a twat but at least doesn't try to hide it.

Noel is really as dumb as Liam but tries to come over as some intellectual sort but sounds like some boring student cunt.
