It's not quite "end of" though, he was their weak link - he made a shit load of mistakes for them.  They didn't need a world class keeper, but for about 4/5 years they just passed teams to death and scored 100 goals every season.

Puyol was still playing centre back for that side in 2014.  They've had Mascherano and Song playing centre back with Adriano at left back - defence and goalkeeper have never been their priority.  He was always good, but he wasn't anything more than that - I thought that was widely recognised.

Do you honestly believe that Barcelona wouldn't have dominated world football like they did, with anybody else who's competent in net?  They flirted with Reina for about 4 seasons.

Please stop typing up nonsense.

Is Valdes big enough to cope with the shit on a stick tactics of half our league. Bombing on crosses with carthorses flying at him, and of course corners which we are already shite at defending - he is only 6 foot and that is small for a keeper in this league.

He's come from a team used to having opponents bombard them with alehouse tactics.

He's class, and I really cannot even start to fathom fans questioning if we should go for him.

I haven't watched enough of Barcelona down the years to know how good he is, so will take your word for it.

Clem must have shrunk a lot down the years. I am 6'1 and met Clem a couple of years ago and he looked nowhere near 6, we all commented on how 'small' he was.

Legend obviously, nice fella too.

His height used to be given as 6' 1" if I remember right but as you say, people do actually shrink in height as they get into their 60's.

The thing with Mig is, he's not particularly experienced. He's not a kid, but he's still breaking new ground as a keeper and it shows in a lack of confidence at times.

I think getting a more experienced guy in to compete and help him will be good in the long run. I certainly hope Valdes wouldn't spell the end for Simon because I think he can become a very good keeper. He's just not quite there right now.

And you can name a keeper who definitely would have saved more of them? Because if you do, you're in a minority. Nearly everyone I know who saw that shoot out said all the pens were top drawer.

Some of them were good pens, I'll give you that. But you have to expect a better return than 1 save from 15. De Gea, Lloris, Howard, both Chelsea's keepers and Hart would all have kept out well more than 1. I'd even expect Szczesny to do better, and he's largely pish.

It was the shot stopping aspect I was alluding to.

Penalties being shots and all.

And Mignolet, generally, not being great at doing that.

I agree that it's shot stopping but it's a slightly different art to saving them from open play.

Mignolet needs to work on most aspects of his game to be fair. He's gone backwards in the last year.
