I suspect the quality of that stuff was far superior to what they make today.

Depends what you're buying.

There were plenty badly made trainers in the 80s & there are a lot of well made ones you can get now.

Leather tended to better quality then. However, I’ve had late 80s made in Taiwan, etc. suede and nylon Adidas trainees that were no better quality than the ones you get today.

Adidas Earlham in off-white. I won’t be buying them but I really like these. As I get older, I’m increasingly inclined to think, when it comes to trainees, less is more.

i like them, but i have too many white/light i don't wear already. if they were available in a darker colour, i would be all over them.

To be honest, mate, I’m not keen. There’s something about the front, which reminds me of Vans Authentic, that I find off-putting.

I prefer Adidas Nizza in white canvas.

Or these Reebok Club C with cotton uppers.

Recommend listening to the Sneakernomics podcast on BBC Sounds. It covers the history of Adidas (formerly Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory before the acrimonious split into Adidas and Puma). Didn't know they provided Jesse Owens with free spikes rather than Hitler's favourite.
