Dejan Lovren

Lovren is the fifth highest paid defender in the premier league. This will keep him out of the clutches of the best teams in the world who have shown absolutely no interest in signing him.

Klopp accepts his team’s attacking style of play makes it more difficult for centre-backs than at more defence-minded clubs.

“A centre-half for a top team is playing with a lot of space at the back,” he says. “That’s how Tottenham act, how City act and sometimes how Arsenal act. Manchester United are for sure a bit different.

“That is the situation, you have to involve a lot of players usually in offensive things, you cannot be offensive with two players in a counter-attack when there are already eight from the other team in their own half or box. So, yes, of course it is more difficult.

“If we go for a centre-half we need to know how he acts in big spaces, but on the other side centre-halves can feel pretty alone in certain moments if we don’t react the right way after losing the ball.

“That is why counter-pressing is a pretty useful skill.”

How bad was this clown tonight?

Diving in, giving away a penalty, playing opposition players onside, scuffed clearances, weak in the air. He must have lost 3 or 4 headers in the last 10 minutes alone.

You'd swear he had money on Hoffenheim.

Save us, Virgil.

Concedes a free-kick near the halfway line (fair enough, these things happen) but then stands around arguing with the referee for ages, while Hoffenheim take a quick free-kick, leaving us to depend on Chimpy Moreno, for fuck's sake, to prevent an equaliser.

For that alone, I'll say "Go and find a non-Southampton defender better than this cunt."

What happened, though?

Was apparently on L'Equipe's worst team of the year for his Lyon performances, then looked great with Southampton with Wanayama and Schneiderlin in front of him.

£20m was a lot when we paid it for him and he looked great against Klopp's Dortmund in a pre-season game, which seems to have coloured Jurgen's opinion of him. There were even rumours linking him with the captaincy last season.

Was he ever actually any good or did he just benefit from a Southampton system that would even have made Sakho or Klavan look like Baresi?

I hadn't seen much of him before he joined but it seems obvious that he benefited from their system.
