By the letter of the law of the game it's hard to see how this is a penalty. However, Lovren had his hands on the player for some reason which makes it look like he is pushing the striker and that's enough for the referee to give a penalty.

 

If Lovren doesn't want to give away a penalty then he should be running side by side with him with his hands in the natural running position, not clambering over the player making it look like he is pushing the striker. But Lovren is not so clever to do this.

 

The only way that Lovren should get let off for this - after all, we all have to learn from our mistakes and he should learn (like Henderson) that you cannot lay your hands on the back of an opponent and not concede a soft penalty - is if the striker is pulled up under the new law which enables video evidence to punish a player for conning a referee. If this happens, Lovren should be forgiven. Until then, he is responsible for giving away the one goal lead. However we should not have been in this position in the first place, after banging in all the chances we made and passed up.

 

Two points dropped and hopefully some lessons learned by the players. If they're smart enough to learn from them.

The same three cost us every time. I'm tired of talking about them. Lovren has cost us twice (Spurs, Everton), Mignolet has cost us twice (Newcastle, Watford) and Moreno once (Sevilla).

 

That's 5 games since the start of the season we should've won, and it's all because of them three. They'll cost us at least 5 more times by the end of the season as well. Patience ran out years ago.
