World War 1

Started on this day, 100 years ago when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

It would claim the lives of 16 million soldiers and civilians, cause a further 21 million casualties and set in motion events to start another world war 20 years after it ended.

Ignored in Hungary as they refuse any responsibility for actions of the dual monarchy of Austria and Hungary. Same as they deny responsibility for pretty much anything bad that has happened in their history. But they'll be screaming about injustice when the Triannon anniversary comes around.

Much as I love the country, they seriously hold themselves back by refusing to acknowledge any wrongdoing.

Anyway, RIP for all the poor sods that got caught up in this largely pointless war

Fuck off, never heard of it!

I reckon if it had been as massive as you say then I'd probably have heard about it, no?

There's already a thread for conspiracy theories mate, we don't need another one.

I don't think it was a pointless war

For centuries up to the present day Britain's main strategic interest has been to keep the Channel open and maintain the Balance of power within Europe.

If Germany had won then mainland Europe would have been closed to us and been a major invasion threat

Germany needed to be defeated

Such a tragedy and horrific as Kal-El said...no doubt

It was meant to be the war to end all wars. And what has the world done since?

RIP

That's a label coined by an idiot.

It's been bandied about for a 100 yrs, but it was was actually the war that sowed the seeds of Nazism and ww2, largely thanks to the French.

Lets not forget the 20 million killed by the Flu in 1918-19 as a direct cause of the inhuman economic conditions brought on by the war that sowed the seeds of Nazism and Ww2.

Man's stupidity knows no bounds.
