Fatherhood

I don't like making threads about personal things but I know so many people from this site  it would be remiss of me to not tell the GF that I am going to be a dad. Me and Vader are expecting the baby on Boxing Day.

I am still at the stunned and shocked stage to be honest - even though I saw the baby in the scan on Tuesday and even though we've known she's pregnant for 8 weeks, it just hasn't sunk in yet. He or she is definitely not planned so that's added to the shock factor.

So what do you do with these baby things? When is it acceptable to keep them quiet by watching boxsets of Monty Python's Flying Circus? Do I need to get them an alarm clock to wake up at a reasonable time? Any advice appreciated!

Congrats mate, you will enjoy and hate it at the same time. Enjoy the younger years whilst you can, they grow up fast and turn into a pain in the arse.

Congratulations!

As said above, try to enjoy it as much as possible as they change and grow so quickly. in them first 6 months, something new happens and develops near enough each day, but you don't realize or get to savour it until it's over, as you become so focussed on 'getting through' each day (sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning/sleeping/feeding/cleaning) and that is just each day.

Also mentioned above is how you realize you didn't do much before they are born, and again it is so true. Now, when you find time to sit and eat yourself, get more than a couple of hours broken sleep, or see a friend/relative who isn't there to see your new baby, you'll feel you've achieved something.

It'll be the best and most difficult thing you ever do. Try to remember that when the inevitable tiredness of you and your partner result in some petty arguments.

Enjoy!

We had an unexpected little thing a few years ago now. Little girl, and I can honestly say that she is the biggest pain in the arse and the best thing in the world at the same time. It's nuts. Difficult to explain it, but you're about to find out.

Advice? Well everyone's going to have some and all of the above is true. The first 4 months are boring but awesome, and it's a great time to watch the box sets. We got a pilates ball and the kid would fall asleep in my arms while I was bouncing on that and watching every DVD I've ever owned. Good times. Never, EVER failed that ball. So there's my pearl of wisdom.

Enjoy.

Is right Dan. Congratulations mate. Best thing in the world. Ever.

I am only 5 weeks and the best advice I would offer is if it is a boy, expect to feed it more than usual, All I would really give as advice is get Dr Brown's bottles and there is no need for an alarm clock.

If it is a boy, fuck knows. Get loads of Just For Men or book in to Rooney's hair specialist.

And ignore every fuckers advice about how to bring it up. Insitinct takes over and you just know what to do.

I would also suggest reading up on body language as with them being unable to talk, it helps you (a lot) to understand what they want. Don't read ny books or anything about birth etc, just wait until the moment comes and then take it from there, get yourslef mentally ready.

And take in a big fuck off box of tissues. You're going to need them when you see it's slimey head.

That obviously should be "If it's a girl"

Fucking sleep deprivation.

Cheers everyone, much appreciated.

All the best mate, you had one of them 4d scans? they are boss

She's only 13 weeks along, you can only have those at 26-30 weeks apparently. I've seen them but not thought about whether or not we're getting one. We very probably will as you only have your first child once.

  • 6 months later...

Jack Dylan Thomas was born on 10/01/2015 at 10:01pm weighing 10lbs 1oz (very nearly 2) by emergency section. I got a phonecall at 6:00am saying they were about to start her off so I rushed in. She was in labour for 12 hours and was going nowhere so by the end they pulled it and decided to have a section, which was the right thing to do. In a few days I'll have them both back at home with me and the journey truly begins.
