Reports in Germany suggest the Reds are close to an agreement with the German midfielder, but how much do you know about the highly-rated 20-year-old

Liverpool are close to signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can, according to reports in Germany.

Bild suggest a deal of around €12m has already been agreed between the two clubs with personal terms seen as a formality.

The 20-year-old has impressed this season and fits the mould of the type of upgrade Brendan Rodgers is wanting to make to his squad this summer.

But how much do you know about him?

Here's our comprehensive guide to the potentially newest Red.

Who is he?

Can was born in Frankfurt and began his footballing career with minnows SV Blau-Gelb Frankfurt.

After six years he joined Eintracht Frankfurt before making the move to the youth ranks of Bavarian giants Bayern Munich.

After only four first team appearances for Bayern he made the switch to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Scrapper: Can likes to dictate play but can also mix should the need arise

He has represented Germany at U15, U16 and U17 level but, because of his Turkish ancestry, is eligible to play for their national team.

However, Can has stated on numerous occasions he sees himself as German and "likes playing for Germany very much, and wants to make it in the DFB".

Why did Bayern get rid of him?

It wasn't for lack of talent that's for sure.

Can displayed a lot of promise in his early career with Bayern II, but such is the competition at the Allianz Arena, they deemed him surplus to requirements and moved him on.

Not before they inserted a fixed-price return clause in his contract though. More on that later ...

Where does he play?

Can is a versatile operator who has proven adept in a number of positions while with Bayer.

As well as his favoured central midfield role the 20-year-old has been deployed at the back at times both centrally and in both full-back positions.

Versatile: Can has played a number of positions for Bayer this season

He is a thoroughly modern midfielder, technically sound with two good feet, who is not content with simply getting and giving it.

In the mould of a Bastian Schweinsteiger - albeit not yet as polished - Can also gets forward when the need arises netting three times in the Bundesliga this season.

Where would he fit in at Anfield?

If the deal was to go through Can would project to compete with Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen for a spot alongside skipper Steven Gerrard in the middle.

That said, both in age and positional terms, Can is perhaps a better fit as Gerrard's long-term replacement in the deep-lying playmaker role.

Will Liverpool sign him?

If you believe the reports emanating from his homeland then it's already a done deal.

That may have a great deal to do with Rodgers' relationship with Can's agent who facilitated the Nuri Sahin and Samid Yesil deals.

What role do Bayern have?

Well, here the plot thickens.

While Leverkusen own the player outright and can, in theory, do as they wish with him, former club Bayern could provide a fly in the ointment.

As part of the €5m deal that saw him move to the BayArena last summer it is mooted that Bayern inserted a fixed-price clause meaning they have the power to sign him back should they wish.

Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has stated in the past he would like Can back down the line and would not OK any deal for him to switch to England.

Wait and see.

Why don't you use the transfer speculation thread like everyone else?

Specific players that are more than just hearsay and who are "close" to being signed should get their own threads to avoid the Transfer Thread being bloated up to 1000+ pages.

Efficiency and organization.

Cheers for the neg.

It is hardly a decent source.  It is speculation.

Closer than Mascherano or Sanchez, would you not agree?

No.

Lock thread. I'm outraged at the outbreak of forum etiquette disregarding skullduggery.

Not outraged, but everyone else posts in the transfer speculation thread, don't see why this guy always posted new threads.

Unless it is confirmed it is speculation.

Guest Numero Veinticinco

I'm delighted to see we're looking at a Gerrard understudy/successor who can play in other positions while the captain's still around.

He's not the controlling midfielder you want. He's the powerful, tough player you didn't seem too mad on.

Just said on bt sport that he's a box to box midfielder who can play fullback! He ticks the versatility box! Apparently he's got a £10 million release clause, and the German journo on there has just confirmed our interest, basically saying it was a snip at that price.
