World Cup 2014

Recommended Posts

So I've just read someone compare Landon fucking Donovan being left out of the US WC squad to if Gerrard had been left out for England.

Fucks sake, just reaffirms my position that most over here have a long way to go to even think they know a damn thing about this game.

anyone setting up a fantasy league for this?

I will be running one. Hoping to have entry form ready for the weekend. I've been running a fantasy footy league for about 12 years, always do one for World Cup/Euro. Costs £5. Usually about 50/60 people so more chance of winning. Check my website, www.thegriersons.co.uk, the domestic league is still up. Will be a similar format. You will pick a squad of 20 players, restricted to one player from a country and 5 players from 4 groups of seeds.

Or Aguero/Spain at 200/1 or Messi/Spain at 80/1

I'm all over Spain really.

I think they're certainly value, and should be shorter than Germany, and they'd be my second pick to win it. I'm not having Brazil at all, and I think Germany could end up being a bit toothless upfront. Spain will need Costa to be fit and firing as I don't see any of the other Spanish strikers occupying defences enough.

Spain would meet Argentina in the semi finals, I think.

I've got a tenner on Spain at 10/1 (That Ladbrokes deal during the Europa League final).

Thinking about £50 on Messi/Argentina and Aguero/Argentina.

Hmmm, yeah, but then Spain also do have Negredo for example and it's more their midfield that is the deal breaker, plus the experience factor.  Costa being fit would help though obviously.

I've got Spain at 10/1 like you, also another bit at 7/1, then I've got those two scorer/winner doubles and Chile e/w at 50/1.  And a big accumulator for 8 teams to qualify but it includes a coupel of speculative ones like Korea and Nigeria, etc.

I got a free bet off McLean of £5 but they only have Rossi at 50/1 for fuck sake (and it's win singles only), so I'll maybe have that and then supplement it with a smidgen of the 100/1 at BV e/w.

I think Spain should be the favourites - they have the best squad depth and the best players, plus they're a group of proven winners.  I'd say Argentina are the second most likely, along with Brazil.  I don't really see anyone outside that winning it.

Yeah, Negredo could do most elements of a similar role, I don't see them starting him though.

I should have a bet on Chile, out of sentiment more than anything else, but I think they'll finish second in their group then lose to Brazil in the next round.

I'll wait until a day or two before it starts then have a load of group winners accies etc.

Chile are currently about 21/10 to beat Holland, which I think is a great bet. Proper European bookies overrating all Euro teams outside Spain/Germany and underrated South American sides outside Argentina/Brazil type price.

Yeah, that's pretty nice.  They're about 4/1 I think -2 v Australia, which is quite tempting too
