Tony Benn has passed away

Recommended Posts

A wealthy man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of the poor and those workers at the bottom of the pile. An honourable man who shames so many of the rich elite today who would rather support right wing politics and cream off even more for themselves. Tony, you will be sadly missed.

A titan of British politics and a truly great man who spoke with eloquence and insight that was beyond his peers.

I only hope in the future that the left can produce more of his ilk, but I doubt it.

One of the last politicians with real integrity and a value system that he could not be swayed from. The world is poorer without him

"The key to any progress is to ask the question why? All the time. Why is that child poor? Why was there a war? Why was he killed? Why is he in power? And of course questions can get you into a lot of trouble, because society is trained by those who run it, to accept what goes on. Without questions we won't make any progress at all."

'Even when you disagreed with everything he said', said the PM on a champion of the poor, downtrodden, working-class, NHS, and democracy. Sounds about right.

I don't remember much about him, but I was always fascinated by the fact he smoked a pipe. He always looked more like a teacher than a politician. My parents liked him. He was Labour. May he rest in peace.

"We are paying a heavy political price for 20 years in which, as a party, we have played down our criticism of capitalism and soft-peddled our advocacy of socialism" - Speech to Labour Party conference, 1976.
