Yeah, Maldini, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, possibly Dani Alves.

I have yet to see an English full back making a "£27m impact on a season".

I remember the wank fest when they signed Buttner, from all football manager fans.

As mentioned above, what United always needed was a top quality central midfielder and they have yet to sign one.

Nothing wrong with Lallana for me but how many of these tricky creative players do we need? Having scored over 100 league goals and not won the league suggests the attacking side needs tweaking only and the priorities lie elsewhere.

Rodgers said in the press conference that hammering Everton Arsenal Tottenham twice but conceding 3 at Palace Stoke Cardiff etc tells the story and that it's down to concentration not structural and that this is the priority area. Whether that means improving the performances of our existing defenders or bringing in fresh faces not sure but would expect both.

I'm still not convinced he's what we need, but I could see an argument in the theory that he keeps the ball well, even in advanced positions.

We've got a lot of players who can make a forward pass, but that leads to us either attacking or defending, we have no middle ground. Lallana's the type of player who might be able to help with that.

Even with that lot though, the last three were glorified wingers. Carlos was boss but was he really a fullback or a scorer of some amazing free kicks and a blisteringly fast mother fucker?

They're notable full backs for the reason they didn't play like full backs, they did Hollywood shit, which is what you want from a £25 million player, but they can only be afforded in a high class, offensive team that's going to have the ball most of the time.

Maldini was a sensational player but he was also vaunted for his leadership skills, arguably more so than his dedensive capabilities.

Someone like Dennis Irwin was a decent full back but did he have any discernible impact on the mancs' successes? No doubt he was a solid component, as was Neville, but he was nowhere near the impact of their best goalie, centre back, striker or winger.

It's just not a position to be spending that kind of money on unless you quite literally have money to burn.

Irwin, Ashley Cole, Kennedy and Neal were massive parts of their respective teams, as was Maldini, Cafu etc. While a goalkeeper like Schmeicheal, or a centre midfielder like Souey or Keane, or a Kenny or Rushy gets alot of attention and rightly so, the full back can be worth so many points, whether it's cutting out crosses, or delivering them etc.

Neville wasn't in their league, but he was a very good defender. Credit where credit is due.

I'm sure there's better value out there than Shaw. I know we have been linked with the Argentinian fella at Sporting and others, so a cheaper and better option might be out there. However, I can see the reason why the Mancs or us would be willing to sign Shaw.

Guest Numero Veinticinco

Where would that leave Sterling and Coutinho?

Rotation. All of them. Remember under Rafa? Big time rotation. Like that but not taking the piss.

The last few weeks of the season we've been running on fumes. Particularly the forwards. Add the champions league games, and hopefully longer cup runs, the only way to make it successful is to rest players more and have a larger squad.

Agreed.

The signing of Lallana and the return of Borini and Suso should give us more options.

If we intend to keep Borini and Suso here for our first team next season I can't see us signing many more attacking players after Lallana.
