I found the Witcher breaking the normal Netflix mold by having enough narrative to fill it's hour long episodes. I'm also surprised they stayed so slavishly to the novellas timelines and stories. The result is a timeline that you have to pay attention to in order to realise that it's not running concurrently but enough things going on to keep it interesting.

I've spent 100s of hours playing Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, it's my favourite game this gen, so I was at least ahead of the curve as I was familiar with the rules and lore of the world. It can still look a little absurd at times as the show doesn't stifle the more outrageous fantasy elements as Game of Thrones earlier episodes did. If you haven't read the books or played the game then I'm aware the story throws you in and then asks you to stretch your imagination, and credibility, at times.

Either way, 8 episodes felt like enough, I'm hoping it will now tell a linear story going forward whilst finding time for stand-alone Geralt monster hunt episodes because that's always Netflix shows biggest flaw - the "our TV show is really a 10 hour movie" nonsense that plagues 90% of Netflix shows and has infected a lot of other cable/streaming shows; the Mandalorian recently nailed that balance between narrative arc and stand-alone adventures.

Not a bad effort, looking forward to them cancelling it after season 3 because Netflix thinks we all have the attention spans of teenagers.

This was an interesting article I read a while ago on why Netflix cancels some shows so early, royalties seem to play a big factor.

Highlighting again that Neflix are not that good for TV. Their aggressive, slightly underhand, strategies may only serve to sharpen up the other studios and get their act in order. The notion that people won't wait for new eps of shows, or that they don't stand out well enough as additional content on the interface, is baffling to me but then they have all the data to hand.

From what I read in an article Netflix will only give a show the go ahead if they have a minimum of material for 3 series. After those 3 series are finished they either carry on if the demand is there and deals can be struck, or if the demand is low they just cancel them.

I reckon 3 series is long enough to judge any show,so I see no real problem with that.

Wanted to watch something a bit different so plumped for:

Thieves of the Wood (Netflix) 7/10

It's a Flemish production set in Belgium/Aalst region 1747. The dubbing into English is smooth and works well, so can't really comment on the acting, but the visuals are good. Basically about the hardships of the poor around that time and the rich taking the piss as they prance about with their silly wigs on acting like cunts. This bloke returns from being a mercenary on the Silesean front to find out everything has changed. He then joins the outcasts who have been turfed out of the City and live in the woods and it then becomes a bit like Robin Hood but in a good way. Charlotte Timmers who plays one of the lead characters is a bit of a hottie.

4 episodes into the first series of 10 and so far so good.

I’ve started watching an Apple Original show called ‘See’

It’s got Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones in it and it’s incredibly shite. I can’t seem to stop watching it though. It’s a post apocalyptic thing, set a few hundred years in the future where all humans are blind and the queen prays by fingering herself. Then a pair of twins are born with the ability to see. I haven’t finished it yet but I reckon the rating will come in at 4 or 5 out of 10.

Might give it a go if I can find a non dubbed version.

Should be easy enough to find mate. It's quite new, so you may have to give it a while before the usual streaming services add it. Netflix have it on in loads of languages including Flemish original.

I think I mentioned I’d watched the first couple or so. I thought it was pretty bad.

Of course I was going to watch "don't f*ck with cats" at some point.

Totally forgot about Luka Magnotta....what a horrible fucked up individual.

Didn't really make for great viewing, but the message at the end is a powerful one. Maybe it's time to turn off the internet and stop feeding all this madness.

Just watched- Murder Trial: The Disappearance of Margaret Fleming, BBC2.(previously recorded)

The first time cameras have been allowed into the high court in Glasgow.

There is a sub reddit called "watch people die inside". There is a point in episode 2 where an English teacher from Ayrshire absolutely bitch slaps two defence barristers in a row and the look on their faces would qualify.

Only 2 episodes but well worth a watch.

Don't F*** With Cats- 6/10. This was mostly really entertaining (and very disturbing) but in the end it glossed over some details, the last 30 seconds was exceptionally annoying and it ended up a bit unsatisfying.

The mother was obviously incredibly delusional, but whose were the second pair of hands in the video, and who was filming in some of the others? Did he have an accomplice for the cat killings?

Who gave the anonymous tip that they should be looking at Magnotta? Was it himself?

Did Magnotta actually "reverse-stalk" the woman and film inside the casino where she worked?

And the annoying bit (aside from a man's death taking second fiddle to those of cats and a dog)- telling the story from the point of view of the Facebook group was an excellent way to get it across. However, it was really misguided as they were a bunch of self-important and rather horrible internet Scoobies.

They did absolutely fuck all to help catch the guy (as above, they got an anonymous tip about Magnotta in the first place, possibly from himself), they hounded some South African bloke and more than likely contributed to his suicide (blithely glossed over by Deanna who decided she couldn't even pronounce Namibia for some reason) and they basically provided a fanclub for Magnotta which was pretty much what he wanted- presumably he was a part of it from the very beginning.

To then have Deanna- a person who basically stated in the first few minutes that she used internet personae to be who she wanted online, anonymously- turn to the camera in the last few seconds and tell the viewer that they were somehow complicit in all this was a fucking disgrace. The mother, deluded as she was, was spot on in her assessment of them.
