To the people that have watched the youth team's regularly over the last twelve months, are there any players that look like they might be close to forcing their way in to the first team picture?

Beck, Bradley and Morton are the 3 closest to the first-team squad as things stand now.

Just how Bradley will be impacted following the arrival of Calvin Ramsay and the return, for now, of Neco Williams, remains to be seen.

Owen Beck on the other hand is by far and away the best left-back we have in the Academy ranks. He'll be involved in cup squads next season for sure.

Tyler will again be involved in cup squads, though I do wonder if he'll get as many minutes next season as he did the season just gone.

As for the upcoming season, I'm hoping for big seasons from Luca Stephenson and Layton Stewart.

If Layton stays healthy this coming season, he could very well break into the first-team setup. Just something about the lad that makes me think that he can make it here. Some of his movement reminds me of a young Torres.

I think Luca is going to kick on this coming season too. A key player for the 18s this past season, he was sorely missed when he was out through injury and he makes a noticeable difference to the 18s when he plays. He might still be a couple of seasons away from the first team, but he's worth keeping an eye on.

A dark horse may be Stefan Bajcetic - He was having a fantastic season at both centreback and in the deep midfield role before he too went down with a season-ending injury. Hopefully he comes back to fitness in readiness for pre-season.

I'm sure we'll see a couple of surprise inclusions in the League Cup squads in the new season - Much like Harvey Blair getting the nod against Preston last season, I can see someone like Bobby Clark getting a start when perhaps the majority wouldn't consider him for selection.

Here we go ...

Liverpool U21s played out a 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Caernarfon Town on Saturday afternoon.

Jake Cain opened the scoring for the Reds on 17 minutes though the Welsh outfit earned themselves a late leveller through Osian Evans.

Boss Barry Lewtas fielded the experience of player-coach Jay Spearing alongside the likes of Layton Stewart and Oakley Cannonier at the Academy.

Jack Bearne's clever play down the right led to the first goal of the encounter, as he weaved in and out to produce a ball for Cain to score with a left-footer drilled finish.

Goalkeeper Liam Hughes was forced into an excellent save by the visitors, while Terence Miles denied what appeared to be a certain goal with a perfectly timed challenge.

Cannonier and Mateusz Musialowski both went close to adding to the scoreline and Stewart was denied from close range twice in the second period.

Caernarfon Town equalised late on following a swift counterattack, which saw Evans finish off a clever move to see the fixture end all square.

21s beat Leeds U21s 5-4 earlier today.

Offal

Liverpool U21s secured their first win of pre-season in incredible fashion as Layton Stewart's goal earned a 5-4 result against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Kirkby Academy was the venue for the young Reds’ third friendly outing this summer, following a draw with Caernarfon Town and defeat at Wigan Athletic.

It was evident the game was going to be a thriller from the earliest stages and there was a goal scored apiece within the first 12 minutes.

The visitors took the lead when Mateo Fernandez got in down the right-hand side and placed his finish into the bottom corner, but Liverpool responded swiftly.

Fidel O’Rourke made ground along the flank and though Oakley Cannonier’s attempt to convert his cross was blocked, Mateusz Musialowski was there on the follow-up to beat the goalkeeper and equalise.

In the ascendancy, the Reds repeatedly went close again; Harvey Blair was thwarted in a one-on-one, Luca Stephenson was denied by the Leeds ’keeper and O’Rourke’s free header was saved too.

And, on 25 minutes, Leeds struck instead. A rapid counter-attack was completed by Sean McGurk to put the away team in front for a second time.

By now it was blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stuff and Cannonier had a penalty kick saved on the half-hour mark having been brought down inside the box himself.

Musialowski had a 25-yard effort pushed onto the crossbar before Liverpool did level, with Blair forcing the ball into the net from O’Rourke’s latest delivery.

But for all the hosts’ chances, Leeds took a third lead into the interval as McGurk once more found a way in behind and kept his cool to finish.

The pace of the game – and the goals – continued into the second half and Musialowski restored parity seven minutes after the restart with a jinking run and strike.

O’Rourke was the architect of Barry Lewtas’ Reds getting in front for the first time, the forward releasing Jack Bearne and then meeting the subsequent cross to place a header home.

Leeds were not done, though, and they made it 4-4 with 20 minutes remaining. Keenan Carole’s strong run into the area was halted by a Dominic Corness tackle, but Fernandez was on hand to fire in the loose ball.

Yet the final word went to Liverpool and Stewart, the striker fully capitalising with the winner when Bearne carried the ball around the ’keeper and teed up his teammate.
