Liverpool 0 City 1

Savage loses the ball far too easily and is punished.

City break down the left with Savage trying his best to get back and retrieve the situation. The City winger gets his cross to the back post for an easy tap in for Palmer.

We seen a lot of the ball in the second half, but City kept us at arms length throughout and looked a threat every time they broke forward.

Despite all our possession and territorial advantage in the second half, I don't recall their keeper making a save. There were one or two blocks by defenders, but for the most part we threatened little in the final third.

Thought Norris played well down the left, and he was the outlet in the second half that looked to be the best source of getting in behind the City defence.

The lads continued to graft and showed good attitude and work rate as usual, but the quality in the final third was lacking today.

Under-23s vs. Blackburn, 3 p.m., Kirkby (no TV) :-

Kelleher; Gallacher, Boyes, Clayton, Larouci, Chirivella, Dixon-Bonner, Christie-Davies, Kane, Jones, Longstaff.

Subs : Atherton, Coyle, Hill, Varesanovic.

Flashscores is guesstimating a 4-4-fucking-2 with Christie-Davies and Kane up front. That would be hilarious and ineffective in equal measure.

Liverpool U23s played out a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers in Premier League 2 on Saturday afternoon.

The young Reds had a number of chances at the Kirkby Academy but in the end had to settle for a point. There were positives to take for Neil Critchley's side with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher pulling off some impressive saves, while Isaac Christie-Davies and Liam Coyle returned to action.

Opportunities were few and far between in the first half, with the best opening falling to the visitors early on. An untimely slip from Tom Clayton in the third minute allowed Jack Vale to go through on goal. However, Kelleher was on hand to deny the Blackburn forward. Early in the second half, Vale did beat the Irishman but the goal ended up being ruled out for offside.

It was then Liverpool's turn to threaten to open the scoring. Elijah Dixon-Bonner glanced a header just wide before then hitting a shot straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. Kelleher again denied Rovers with a save at his near post to keep out Ben Patson's deflected effort in the 70th minute.

Then deep into stoppage time, the visitors had a chance to snatch the three points. Sam Durrant crossed for Sam Barnes, but the defender's header was claimed by Kelleher before the referee went on to blow the final whistle.

Liverpool U23s: Kelleher, Gallacher, Clayton, Boyes, Larouci, Chirivella, Dixon-Bonner, Christie-Davies (Coyle, 75), Longstaff, Kane, Jones (Hill, 59).

Unused substitutes: Atherton, Varesanovic.

And that all-important team news :-

Winterbottom; Gallacher, Norris, Clayton, Savage, Christie-Davies, Dixon-Bonner, Cain, Hill, Varesanovic, Stewart.

Subs : Atherton, Beck, Walls, Quansah, Morton.

I can’t believe I’m actually going to see Dal Varesanovic play a game that wasn’t a secret gig. Also, Clarkson, Boyes, Larouci, Longstaff, Williams... they can’t ALL be in the running for tomorrow, Shirley?

Accrington Stanley 0 Liverpool 1

Elijah Dixon-Bonner opens the scoring with a cool finish from around 12 yards.

A direct ball down he left is chased down and we forced some panic in the home side's defence. The ball is worked to Dixon-Bonner who side foots home.
