Tony Gallacher scored a fine goal to put Liverpool U23s on course to a 5-1 victory over Marine in a friendly on Sunday.

The left-back's long-range strike flew into the top corner to break the deadlock in Crosby as Liam Millar, Isaac Christie-Davies and Jack Bearne were also on the scoresheet.

Marine levelled proceedings shortly after half-time but substitute Millar put the visitors back in front when he converted the rebound to his missed penalty.

Christie-Davies then applied the finishing touches to a well-worked move before Bearne added Liverpool's fourth.

Millar completed the scoring with the final kick of the game to grab his second of the day.

Speaking after the match, U23s manager Neil Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: "We played some good football in patches, really nice moves and things we've been working on in training.

"Tony is capable of that. He scored one against Arsenal for the U23s and he scored two for us last season in a behind-closed-doors game. It's not the first time he's produced something like that. It was a great goal."

Liverpool U23s: Winterbottom (George), N. Williams (Millar), R. Williams (Clayton), Boyes, Gallacher (Johnston), Ritaccio, Dixon-Bonner (Chirivella), Sharif, O'Rourke (Kane), Christie-Davies (Varesanovic), Longstaff (Bearne).

Offal

Liverpool U23s drew 0-0 with Coventry City’s first team in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening.

The game at Rugby Town was a tight affair featuring few chances at either end, with the young Reds’ clearest sight of goal falling to Liam Millar, who was denied one-on-one by Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson just before the hour.

The stalemate extends Neil Critchley’s side’s unbeaten run this summer to five matches, and the manager was satisfied with how his players acquitted themselves against League One opposition.

“It was an even contest. I would say they had a bit more territory and carried a bit more of a threat than us in the first half, but without creating too many clear-cut chances, and I thought we defended very well as a team throughout the whole game,” Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com.

“They hit the post in the second half but we had a really good one-on-one chance as well. They were the two best chances of the game really.

“So generally I’m pleased with how we performed tonight against a good League One team. I think looking at their team they’ll do well in their league this year.”

On the benefits of the Reds’ U23s competing with senior professionals, Critchley explained: “It’s everything.

Physically obviously you’re playing against bigger, quicker, stronger players so if your decision-making and your anticipation isn’t quite right, they beat you to the ball.

“Technically, if you turn the ball over you’re giving the ball back to good players and you don’t see it, so it puts more pressure on our players to perform: technically, physically, with the decisions they make on the pitch.

“It was a really, really good test for us, and generally over the 90 minutes I thought a lot of the players passed that test.”

Morgan Boyes prevented the hosts from taking an early lead when he blocked an effort by Wesley Jobello on the line, and Ben Winterbottom then saved from the midfielder soon after half-time.

Millar’s missed opportunity was preceded by Coventry’s Michael Rose hitting the woodwork and Liverpool substitute Abdi Sharif was forced off late on due to pain in his knee following a tackle.

Critchley said: “He’s on crutches, we always do that as a precaution. He’s felt something in his knee and couldn’t carry on.

“We’re obviously not going to know more until the next 24 hours, so that’s definitely a negative to come from the night unfortunately.”

Liverpool U23s: George (Winterbottom, 46), N. Williams, Johnston, Boyes (Clayton, 62), Gallacher, Chirivella, Kane, Dixon-Bonner (Sharif, 62), Christie-Davies (Ritaccio, 80), Millar, Bearne (Longstaff, 75).

The 23s were action again yesterday, drawing 3-3 with Anderlecht's under 21s.

Offal

Liverpool U23s played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Anderlecht U21s in Belgium on Sunday.

Ovie Ejaria, Tom Clayton and Elijah Dixon-Bonner were all on the scoresheet for Neil Critchley's team.

The home side, managed by former Reds star Craig Bellamy, took the lead from the penalty spot but Ejaria soon pounced to level the affair.

Anderlecht regained the lead before Clayton made it 2-2 following a header from a free-kick.

Dixon-Bonner put the Reds 3-2 up with a superb strike but the home side earned a share of the spoils with a late equaliser following a set-piece.

Reflecting on the draw, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was a really good performance with lots of positives to take.

“The only disappointment was poor defending from a set-piece with their last-minute equaliser.

“The boys have got to learn quickly that they have to keep their concentration levels right until the end and defend better from set-pieces as our performance merited the victory.”

Liverpool U23s: George, N. Williams, Gallacher, Johnston, Boyes (Clayton, 70), Chirivella, Kane (Varesanovic, 80), Ejaria (Dixon-Bonner, 65), Millar, Christie-Davies, Bearne.

The 18s were also in action against their Anderlecht counterparts, but were edged out 3-2 by the Belgians.

Offal

Liverpool U18s fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Anderlecht in Belgium on Sunday afternoon.

Barry Lewtas’ side were 2-0 down only for a trialist to net twice to bring them level.

However, the home side regained the lead to earn their victory.

Reflecting on the outing, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "We played really well, to be fair, and I can't knock the lads.

"We have had a really good, full-on week with the game last weekend at Celtic and then the army camp, which the lads really enjoyed.

"We had some good moments in this game against a good Anderlecht side and it was a really good game for us."
