Has glatzel been mentioned as a prospect yet? 22 goals is incredible along with 21 from Duncan. Any word on them training at melwood?

Both have been up to Melwood.

Both are now taking the step up to the 23s, which will give O'Rourke and Bearne more game time in the 18s.

I prefer Glatzel over Duncan as he does more outside the box than Bobby, but both are exceptional talents at this age group.

Agree on Glatzel over Duncan, but then I've not watched all the games, and the ones I have watched have tended to be the ones where Glatzel has been on the scoresheet, and the ones where Duncan has been less so, and that may well be affecting my judgement!

Despite all the goals, I am not sure either of them will end up as 'strikers'

A nice rundown on the squad from the manager here

Glad to hear that they might start to get a bit more action with the U23s though, as I've found the U23s a bit tough to watch this season. This is due to a combination of the better players either being with the senior squad (which is good!), on loan (also good), or injured (not so good), but for me its just been a bit uninspiring...

Match report: Glatzel gives U23s win over West Ham

Paul Glatzel's poacher's finish earned Liverpool U23s a 1-0 win over their West Ham United counterparts in Premier League 2 on Monday night, writes Chris Shaw.

In the final stages of an encounter that had lacked opportunities for long periods, the striker – who celebrates his 18th birthday on Wednesday – pounced on an Abdi Sharif assist to convert from close range. It was Glatzel’s first strike at U23 level but his 23rd of the campaign overall and proved the difference between the sides at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

For all the commitment and energy from both teams in the opening 20 minutes, genuine goalscoring chances were rare, with the Hammers perhaps enjoying the better of it, and it was they who launched a futile appeal for a penalty midway through the half, when a strike by Ajibola Alese struck George Johnston en route to goal.

In one of the cleanest passages of play, West Ham’s Jahmal Hector-Ingram made ground with a direct dribble along the right flank on 28 minutes and lifted an inviting cross to the edge of the Liverpool box.

Oladapo Afolayan was there to meet the ball with a first-time hit that was sent too close to goalkeeper Shamal George to cause any real concern.

The most promising avenue for Critchley’s side had been through balls to the runs of Glen McAuley and Glatzel, with both finding space but unable to exploit it fully.

They did combine five minutes before the interval, though. McAuley used time on the right-hand side of the West Ham box to pick out his fellow forward in the middle and Glatzel’s low shot was blocked by the recovering Kristijan Belic.

The stalemate of the opening 45 minutes continued into the early stages of the second half, though Curtis Jones did get a sight of goal just shy of the hour mark. Glatzel’s hard work deep in the left corner paved the way for the opportunity but, having spun around the marking of Alfie Lewis in the area, the Reds No.10 fired straight at the goalkeeper.

The Hammers carved out a clear chance at the other end soon after, substitute Dan Chesters sliding in Mesaque Dju on the left, but the final finish flew harmlessly off target. Instead it was Liverpool who found the breakthrough on 77 minutes.

Connor Randall intelligently nodded a long diagonal to the right into the forward run of substitute Sharif and he squared for Glatzel to rush in and force home the winning goal from yards out.

McAuley knocked a stoppage-time effort off the near post after scampering free near the right corner flag, but the visitors had done enough for a hard-fought win.

Liverpool U23s: George, Randall, Juanma, R. Williams, Johnston, Coyle, McAuley, Christie-Davies, Glatzel (Duncan, 85), Jones (Sharif, 74), Lewis (Larouci, 66).

Unused substitutes: Atherton, Gallacher.

McAuley and Glatzel strike as U23s win at Bournemouth

Glen McAuley and Paul Glatzel struck the goals as Liverpool U23s recorded a 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth U21s at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon, writes Fat Ste.

The victory for Neil Critchley’s side still gives the Reds a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup.They have moved up to second place in Group C and they must now hope Burnley’s meeting with West Bromwich Albion on Friday ends in a draw.

Ben Woodburn made his first start for the U23s since the mini-derby in November and he was a lively figure in attack as he completed 63 minutes.

Critchley’s charges made a fine start to the game and grabbed the opening goal when an inviting ball down the line from Adam Lewis was missed by a Bournemouth defender and McAuley nipped in to finish with a curled effort.

And Glatzel, who signed his first professional contract with the club on his 18th birthday on Wednesday, came off the bench and drilled home an unstoppable strike to make it 2-0.

Since the heavy defeat by Villarreal three months ago, Critchley’s side are now unbeaten in 13 games. Reflecting on the victory, he told Liverpoolfc.com: “The boys gave a really good performance, with and without the ball, and we created some good opportunities. Glen and Paul scored two really well-taken goals and it was a good day for us.”

On the return of Woodburn, Critchley added: “It was great to have Ben back and he had some lovely moments in the game.

“He was unlucky not to score when their goalkeeper made a good save and he will be the better for getting some minutes under his belt.”

Liverpool U23s: George, Randall (Gallacher, 75), Juanma, Whelan, Johnston, Coyle (Cain, 75), Woodburn (Glatzel, 63), Sharif, McAuley, Christie-Davies, Lewis.

Match report: U18s see off Stoke to take top spot

Liverpool U18s climbed to the top of the U18 Premier League North table with an impressive 3-1 win over a tough Stoke City side at the Academy on Wednesday, writes Dominic Raynor.

Rhys Williams, Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Leighton Clarkson got the goals as Barry Lewtas' team moved three points clear of second-placed Derby County.

Visitors Stoke had beaten Everton 4-2 at the weekend to knock Liverpool's Merseyside rivals off top spot but found little joy on a gloriously sunny day in Kirkby.

Reds centre-back Williams, who signed his first professional contract yesterday, headed the hosts in front and Dixon-Bonner restored the lead with a low shot from the angle on 22 minutes, after Abdoulaye Toure had briefly levelled for the away side.

Having scored a last-minute equaliser in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, Clarkson made sure of the three points with five minutes to go when he dispossessed a Stoke defender on the edge of the box and slotted a finish past goalkeeper Nathan Broome.

The Potters enjoyed some good spells over the 90 minutes but Liverpool started the game on the front foot with the full-backs bombing on down the flanks to bolster the attack early on.

Right-back Jack Walls was particularly prominent in the opening stages and combined well with Abdi Sharif on the touchline before the latter was fouled for the free-kick which led to the opening goal.

Jake Cain whipped in a delivery and Williams rose highest to head in his fifth goal of the season.

The Reds kept the pressure on as Sharif fired a low, 25-yard shot wide of Broome's right-hand post but, after being kept at arm’s length for the opening quarter-hour, the visitors equalised with their first shot on goal.

Toure broke at pace as the young Potters launched a counter-attack and as Walls raced back to recover his position, the No.11 cut inside the full-back and beat goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros with a powerful shot to level the score at 1-1.

A moment of brilliance from the Reds soon restored the lead, though.

The impressive Clarkson collected the ball after some good build-up play by striker Paul Glatzel in midfield, surged forward and slipped a perfectly-weighted through pass to Dixon-Bonner on the left of the box.

The all-action No.11 made no mistake, rifling his low shot past Broome and into the far corner of the net.

Dixon-Bonner had the chance to add his second moments later, but saw a similar effort blocked.

A brilliant tackle in the box from Stoke defender Lewis Macari denied Cain a shooting chance as Liverpool ended the half strongly and Dixon-Bonner flashed another strike just wide after some slick build-up play and a clever pass from Yasser Larouci had set up the chance.

The expected Stoke response came almost immediately after the break as a last-ditch tackle and an important defensive block denied a pair of goalscoring chances.

Liverpool's Glatzel, back with the U18s as Neil Critchley's U23s are not in action until their Premier League 2 mini-derby against Everton on March 4, showed his class with a flick and turn that forced Macari to handle the ball and deny his progress.

From the resulting free-kick, strike partner Bobby Duncan brought a save from Broome with a dipping 25-yard effort.

Glatzel was revelling in pulling the strings and minutes later he threaded a typically clever pass through the Stoke defence from which Clarkson fired a shot across the face of goal.

With the game still in the balance, Stoke pressed forward for the equaliser and looked almost certain to get it on 65 minutes when Mohamed Sankoh got in behind Williams. However, Reds 'keeper Jaros got a vital touch on his shot from a tight angle to force it past the far post.

The Potters turned to a training ground routine 10 minutes later after Williams had given away a free-kick with a tackle deemed worthy of a yellow card. Two Stoke players peeled off the end of the Liverpool wall to meet a lofted pass to the back post but Jaros was equal to the resulting header.

With the Liverpool defence undergoing a thorough test, Clarkson relieved the pressure with some individual brilliance. The midfielder harried the Stoke centre-back, robbed him of possession and calmly applied the finish when one-on-one with the 'keeper.

As the final whistle went, Liverpool moved to the top of the table and will now look to consolidate their position in the next league outing, against eighth-placed Blackburn Rovers at the Academy on Saturday.

Liverpool: Jaros, Walls, Larouci, R. Williams, Boyes, Clarkson, Sharif (Ritaccio, 63), Cain (Bearne, 77), Glatzel (O'Rourke, 88), Duncan, Dixon-Bonner.

Unused substitutes: Atherton, Savage.
