Bobby Adekanye and Rafael Camacho also missed two penalties and the away side played the majority of the game with 10 men.

Going into the game U23s boss Neil Critchley was without injured captain Matty Virtue, so Adam Lewis was switched to midfield with Yasser Larouci making his U23s debut at left-back.

The young Reds had a great chance to take the lead on 35 minutes from the penalty spot. Burnley defender Jordan Cropper handled on the line and was shown a straight red card.

Camacho stepped up to take the spot-kick but failed to hit the target as he sent his effort wide.

Burnley took the lead on 52 minutes. Kamil Grabara denied Dan Agyei from close range but the ball fell invitingly to Tinashe Chakwana who made no mistake from close range.

Liverpool’s response was excellent and they levelled two minutes later when McAuley headed home a pinpoint delivery from Christie-Davies. It was a sweet moment for the Ireland youth international as it was his first goal at U23 level.

The Reds had a great chance to win the game when they were awarded a second penalty 11 minutes from time.

This time Adekanye took the responsibility but saw his effort saved by Adam Legzdins.

The Burnley stopper then produced last minute heroics as he produced a superb double save to deny McAuley a winner.

Liverpool U23s: Grabara, N Williams, Larouci, Masterson, Johnston, Chirivella, Adekanye, Lewis, McAuley, Christie-Davies, Camacho.
