Anybody seen much of this Ethan Ennis lad who’s turned down a new deal here  and looks like he’s on his way to the mancs or Chelsea? Presumably he must be pretty good if they’re both in for him.

Never heard of the cunt

Ennis made a few appearances for the 18s last season. Looked quite sharp, scored a few goals, most notably a hattrick against Sutton United in the FA Youth Cup. He came off the bench in that game for the last 25 minutes or so and was able to take advantage of some tired legs.

From the outings that I did see him play in, he looks to be a busy little striker, quite direct with decent pace. Very similar to Max Woltman. From these limited appearances, I would suggest that he's on par with Woltman, but quite a distance behind Layton Stewart.

Bearne at the double as U23s hit five in friendly

Jack Bearne scored twice as Liverpool U23s began their pre-season preparations with a 5-1 win over Rylands FC on Wednesday evening, writes Steve Hunter.

The forward looked sharp on his return to action after an injury hit last season.

Warrington side Rylands gave a good account of themselves in the 30-minutes each way encounter, but Barry Lewtas' charges were clinical in the final third.

Bearne opened the scoring after five minutes from the penalty spot after he was brought down before he then doubled the Reds advantage.

Rylands pulled a goal back just before the break before a brilliant team move led to Liverpool's third goal.

James Norris found space down the left flank and his superb pass found Lee Jonas who made no mistake from close range.

Tom Clayton and Max Woltman completed the scoring for the young Reds.

U23s boss Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was a pleasing run-out for us and we scored some brilliant goals.

"It was great to see Jack back in action getting his two goals and hopefully he can push on now.

"We were grateful to Rylands FC for the game and I thought they gave a very good account of themselves.

"You could see they are a good team and I would like to wish them all the best for the coming season."

U18s begin pre-season with Birmingham win

A youthful Liverpool U18s began pre-season with a 2-0 win over Birmingham City at the Academy on Wednesday night, writes Steve Hunter.

The game was played over three halves of 30-minutes as the youngsters enjoyed a valuable workout.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson had a very young side out with the vast majority of the side U17, and there was also the welcome sight of Oakley Cannonier back in action after returning from injury.

Reflecting on the win, Bridge-Wilkinson told Liverpoolfc.com: "We had a really young side out and the boys did well.

"It was great to give them valuable minutes and a lot of the boys managed to play for an hour which was pleasing.

"The boys have been working really hard and it was great to see Oakley back in action and looking sharp."

Fidel O’Rourke hat-trick leads U23s to friendly win

Fidel O’Rourke netted a hat-trick as Liverpool U23s continued their pre-season programme with a 6-0 win over Caernarfon Town at the Academy on Wednesday night, writes Steve Hunter.

Sheyi Ojo, Max Woltman and Melkamu Frauendorf were also on the mark for the Barry Lewtas side.

Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was another good outing from the boys and we played some really nice stuff. I was pleased for Fidel to get his hat-trick and that will be brilliant for his confidence. Fair play to Caernarfon, they tried to play the right way and I wish them all the best for the new season.”

The young Reds opened the scoring after just seven minutes when O’Rourke produced a stunning finish into the top corner from distance. Ojo then doubled the lead with a close-range header after Tom Claytons rasping drive was saved. Woltman pounced to make it 3-0 after a wonderful pass from Luca Stephenson picked out the forward at the far post, and Woltman then turned provider as he pulled the ball back to O’Rourke, who produced another clinical finish.

The Reds had a chance to make it 5-0 before the break, but Ojo had a penalty saved after Stephenson was brought down, but O’Rourke completed his hat-trick in the second half, before Frauendorf made it six with a superb strike.

Good to see Frauendorf healthy, interesting to see Stephenson playing far enough forward to get fouled in the box, and surely someone will come in for Ojo. No indication whether Ojrzynski (on loan at Caernarfon this year) played against us.

The offal has only just posted an article about Ojrzynski's loan move, saying that it is pending international clearance.

Offal

Liverpool FC goalkeeper Jakub Ojrzynski has joined Caernarfon Town on a season-long loan.

The 18-year-old will play his football in the Welsh Premier League in the 2021-22 season.

Ojrzynski signed a new long-term contract with the Reds earlier this month after joining from Legia Warsaw in his homeland of Poland two years ago.

He moved between the U18s and the U23s last season, making 10 appearances at the younger level and seven with the older age group.

A vocal presence at the back, the Poland youth international has also trained with the first team and took his place on the bench for the Premier League clash with Sheffield United in February.

The move remains subject to international clearance.

Cannonier hat-trick sees LFC U18s beat Chester

A hat-trick from Oakley Cannonier swept Liverpool U18s to a 3-0 victory over Chester City in their latest pre-season friendly at the Academy, writes Andy Kelly.

A young Reds side containing several U16s played the 60-minute match on Saturday morning.

Cannonier, 17, took the honours with all three goals, two from the penalty spot, while the forward - who signed his first professional contract with the club earlier this summer - also hit the crossbar with a header.

Liverpool dominated possession but it took 20 minutes to break down a well-organised Chester side, Melkamu Frauendorf unlocking the door with his clever pass picking out a darting run from Cannonier, who finished confidently on the turn.

Four minutes later, Cannonier had his second, moving on to a fine pass from the influential Luca Stephenson and being fouled in the box. He picked himself up and beat the keeper easily from the spot. Later, midfielder (since when ?) Terence Miles rattled the bar with a fine shot from distance to bring the first half to a close.

The second half was just two minutes old when the Reds stretched their lead as Cannonier completed his hat-trick. Stephenson made yet another run into the box and was clipped, and while the player tried to stay on his feet, eventually succumbed to gravity. Cannonier stepped up to convert with a minimum of fuss to earn the match ball.

He almost added a fourth, turning Stephenson’s cross against the bar, before later heading a fine cross from Luke Chambers just past the post. Stephenson had the ball in the net only to be denied by the assistant’s flag, while the Chester keeper also pulled off a fine reaction save from the midfielder to keep the final margin to three.

Woltman bags a treble as U18s beat Plymouth in friendly

A Max Woltman hat-trick was the highlight as Liverpool U18s saw off Plymouth Argyle 6-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Kirkby on Tuesday, writes Andy Kelly.

The 17-year-old matched the feat of Oakley Cannonier in the previous warm-up fixture last weekend and, like Cannonier, also rattled the crossbar.

An experienced Reds line-up started the match and Plymouth’s goalkeeper was called into action early, making fine saves from a curling Woltman effort and a close-range Lee Jonas header within the opening 10 minutes.

The visitors held out until halfway through the first period, when the goalkeeper spilled a shot from James McConnell and Stefan Bajcetic was alert to tuck away the rebound.

Liverpool doubled the lead almost instantly after a fine team move. The returning James Balagizi fed Luke Chambers, whose perfect pass from midfield put Woltman in on goal and he finished easily.

Ten minutes later, the Chambers-Woltman combination struck again with the latter finishing an almost carbon copy of his previous effort.

The Wirral-born striker completed his hat-trick within a minute of the second half kicking off, scooping the ball over the advancing ‘keeper and into the net.

Woltman blasted a shot against the bar before turning provider for the fifth, squaring for Dominic Corness to fire home after James Norris had led a superb break from a Plymouth corner.

That goal prompted a wave of substitutions by Reds manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, with many U16s arriving to finish the contest.

Goalkeeper Harvey Davies - fresh from Jürgen Klopp’s first-team training camp in Austria - made a fine save to maintain the lead before the hosts then stretched it to six, pinching a ball high in the opposition penalty area and squaring for an easy finish.

The visitors did, however, grab a consolation 10 minutes from the end as a low free-kick squeezed between the post and Davies’ dive.

U23s play out stalemate in pre-season friendly with Newcastle

Liverpool U23s' pre-season schedule continued with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The young Reds created several good opportunities during the friendly at the Academy but were unable to convert the chances as both sides drew a blank.

“It was a really good workout and I was pleased with the lads because we had a young team out,” U23s boss Barry Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We played some really good stuff in the first half but just couldn’t score, then in the second half we just couldn’t break down their back five.

“But there were some pleasing moments as we get ready for our Premier League 2 season-opener versus Manchester City next Sunday.”

(There are rumours of an 8-0 win for the Under-18s, or perhaps Under-19s, on Saturday morning, but the offal have not put up anything about it, possibly because of 'Trialists'.)

Under-23s vs. Man City (2 p.m., Kirkby, NO TV) :-

Hughes; Gallacher, Norris, Clayton, Koumetio, Corness, Morton, Dixon-Bonner, Woltman, Musialowski, O’Rourke.

Subs : Kelly, Chambers, Ritaccio, Stephenson.

I hope none of the absent players are injured, but that would be the only explanation for not playing, say, Gordon, Bradley, Quansah, and hopefully some of the others are going on loan.

Two of our outfield subs played yesterday, and the other has played three games in the last two seasons combined.

Liverpool U23s begin season with Man City draw

Liverpool U23s began the new Premier League 2 season by drawing 0-0 with Manchester City at the Academy.

Sunday's evenly matched contest featured fine saves by Liam Hughes and Ciaran Slicker as the sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.

An early surge from midfield from Dominic Corness ended with a shot that was well held by City keeper Slicker. Elijah Dixon-Bonner tested Slicker before superb defending was needed at the other end as Liverpool captain Tom Clayton - who formed an impressive partnership with Billy Koumetio - intercepted Luke Bolton's low cross.

Mateuz Musialowski then produced a weaving run from his central role to take on the City defence  before firing wide, and the Polish forward was later thwarted by Slicker after good work from Tyler Morton and Max Woltman.

Reds stopper Hughes made two excellent saves to deny Cole Palmer in the second half as the game ended in stalemate.

You will have seen the stories about the behind closed doors game against Villa that also took place Sunday, so I'd imagine a number of the regular 23s squad members were involved - Gordon got himself on the scoresheet against Villa.
