Koumetio is 17, and his appearance against Stuttgart was his first game since getting injured in November. Last year he looked, well, years away from being ready, mostly in terms of positional awareness. I didn’t expect him to go away with the first team this summer.

It's probably all about the physical ability. He looks ready physically and that's probably jumped him ahead.

Had some real bad luck with injuries when out on loan at Oxford. Broke one of his feet early in the campaign, and when he came back around the Christmas period, he picked up the same injury, but on his other foot, which then kept him out for the remainder of the regular season.

He did return just in time for the playoffs which he was involved in - He started the first leg of the semi-final against Pompey, playing 55 minutes, but was on the bench for the second leg and the subsequent final that they lost to Wycombe (he came off the bench very late in both these games, but did convert Oxford's first penalty in their semi-final shootout win against Pompey).

Definitely a candidate for another loan spell away from the club. Hopefully an injury free loan too. He's been linked to a couple of League One clubs, Pompey most notably, though there are some rumours knocking around that he's wanted by clubs in Belgium, Holland & Germany too.

I'm a fan of Woodburn and do hope that this coming season is far more productive for him, and subsequently us.

I'm not sure loan spells are spurring him on to become better.

injury aside, he's been a real disappointment.

Liverpool U18s chalked up a second successive 5-0 win in pre-season as Huddersfield Town's U19s were beaten at the Academy on Friday.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side had already seen Oakley Cannonier go close and Tom Hill hit a post before they established a lead on the half-hour.

Harvey Blair netted the first of an eventual brace as he finished off a neat Reds move down the right flank from inside the box.

The hosts’ second came shortly after the hour mark and again it was Blair, whose driving run into the Huddersfield area was ended at the cost of a penalty, which he dispatched himself.

And a fine gloss was added to the scoreline as Liverpool struck three times more in the final 10 minutes.

Max Woltman was the creator of their third with a run along the left-hand side and set-up for Hill, whose effort defeated the goalkeeper’s grasp.

Sean Wilson made it four when his cross from the opposite side went straight into the net, and the scoring was wrapped up by debutant Melkamu Frauendorf (these regen names are just shit now - FM Editor).

LFC U23s see off Derby in latest pre-season outing

Quote

Liverpool U23s recorded another pre-season win as they beat Derby County 3-1 at the Academy on Monday afternoon.

Following a draw with The New Saints and victory against Carlisle United in their previous warm-up fixtures, Barry Lewtas’ side impressed again.

Paul Glatzel gave them a fifth-minute lead from the penalty spot in Kirkby.

The striker won the kick himself, having been brought down as he collected Jack Bearne’s reverse pass and stepped inside, and he duly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from 12 yards.

Luis Longstaff saw a good chance saved and Glatzel shot off target with two further opportunities as the young Reds sought to build on their early advantage.

Instead, it was the visitors who netted next, Derby launching a successful counter-attack to level the score against the run of play midway through the first half.

Liverpool got back in front before the break, though. Liam Millar’s cross from the left picked out Bearne, who did the rest with a neat turn and clinical finish.

The chances kept coming into the second half, too.

Leighton Clarkson hit a post, Fidel O’Rourke and Millar had efforts saved, and at the other end Vitezslav Jaros kept out a Derby penalty with 13 minutes remaining.

It was the turning point of the match as Lewtas’ charges promptly made it 3-1.

Owen Beck made inroads down the left with a strong run, exchanged passes with Millar and delivered for O’Rourke to seal victory.

Liverpool U18s made it three wins out of three so far in pre-season as Leicester City were beaten 4-1 at the Academy on Tuesday.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side have now racked up 14 goals and conceded only one in their warm-up games for the 2020-21 campaign.

The young Reds started brightly in Kirkby but the visitors came back into the contest and enjoyed the clearest opportunity to open the scoring when a penalty was given against Jakub Ojrzynski.

But the Liverpool goalkeeper made immediate amends by saving the spot-kick.

The hosts soon capitalised further by taking the lead themselves with 24 on the clock. Layton Stewart’s determination allowed him to send in a pull-back from the right that invited Tom Hill to convert.

Stewart made it 2-0 himself 10 minutes before the interval with an audacious finish, the 17-year-old striker beating the ‘keeper with an outstanding lob from the right-hand side.

And the Reds produced a third three minutes later as a flowing team move involving Conor Bradley, Stewart and James Balagizi resulted in another pull-back to Hill and his second goal of the game.

Bridge-Wilkinson’s charges extended their advantage in the early stages of the second half, with Luke Chambers’ foray down the left leading to a cross that drifted straight into the net.

Leicester partly reduced their arrears with a penalty but it was Liverpool’s day in the Kirkby sunshine and the U18s continue to build up nicely for the new season.

Sharif nets winner as LFC U-23s beat Forest

Quote

Liam Miller and Abdi Sharif were on the mark as Liverpool U-23s beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 in their latest pre-season outing on Friday afternoon.

Barry Lewtas side continued their impressive form as they came back from a goal down to claim victory at the Kirkby Academy. Forest took a first-half leaf courtesy of a penalty, and only a stunning stop from Vitezslav Jaros prevented it becoming 2-0.

With Paul Glatzel on for the second half, the Reds turned the game around. The forward looked sharp, held the ball up well and was unfortunate not to find the net himself.

Glatzel played a key role in the equaliser on the hour mark when he set up Liam Miller, who cut inside from the left and finished superbly. Glatzel was then so unlucky when he fired an audacious effort that beat the Forest keeper but came back off the bar.

Sharif, playing his first 45 minutes of the pre-season, found the winner on 72 minutes when he cut inside from the right and saw his effort deceive the goalkeeper to find the far corner of the net.

U18s put four past United in latest pre-season friendly

Quote

Liverpool U18s registered a fourth successive win in pre-season with an impressive 4-1 defeat of Manchester United on Saturday.

An end-to-end opening 45 minutes at the Academy concluded with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side two goals to the good.

They had taken an early lead through Oakley Cannonier, whose calm control and finish into the bottom left corner came after strong play down the right by Isaac Mabaya.

An entertaining contest included subsequent chances for both teams and one particularly crucial intervention from Lee Jonas to deny United an equaliser at the last moment.

Jonas then proved influential in the other direction, setting up the Reds’ second.

The defender knocked a pass over the top for the run of Mabaya, who chased down the ball, deftly lifted it over the advancing goalkeeper and converted for 2-0.

And Liverpool extended their advantage further just three minutes into the second half, Jarell Quansah heading in at the back post from Dominic Corness’ corner.

Bridge-Wilkinson’s charges were still not satisfied and soon made it four; Harvey Blair’s effort from the left edge of the area struck the post but Cannonier kept the chance alive and Max Woltman fired home.

The visitors did bag a consolation to prevent the Reds from claiming a third clean sheet in pre-season, but it was another positive runout for the youngsters before the campaign begins.

A late flurry of goals saw Liverpool U23s wrap up their pre-season programme with a 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Monday afternoon.

Barry Lewtas’ side scored four times in the final 16 minutes of the friendly in Kirkby in their final warm-up game before kicking off the 2020-21 campaign with a mini-derby against Everton this Sunday.

The young Reds had been frustrated during a goalless first half at the Academy, with Paul Glatzel, Liam Millar, Luis Longstaff and Jake Cain either off target or denied by the goalkeeper from the best of their chances.

But their efforts eventually yielded significant rewards in the closing stages and it was Glatzel who broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

Fidel O’Rourke was felled inside the Huddersfield area and his fellow forward stepped up to coolly send the ‘keeper the wrong way and put the home team ahead.

It was the catalyst for a surge of goals, with Liverpool’s lead doubled on 80.

Cain’s cute pass from the edge of the box invited Tom Clayton to overlap along the left-hand side and his delivery was slotted in by Elijah Dixon-Bonner.

The same scorer soon increased the advantage to three. Leighton Clarkson’s defence-splitting pass freed Longstaff on goal and though he and Dixon-Bonner were thwarted by the goalkeeper, the latter finally put the ball in.

And Lewtas’ charges added a fourth with 86 on the clock, Cain again involved in the build-up as his cross from the left allowed Longstaff to strike and seal another encouraging display.
