Not watching the game today, but my phone lit up with notifications from FlashScore.

Getting destroyed in the first half.

Getting physically dominated in the middle of the park, and there's no option to bypass the midfield, either wide or central.

A corner from the right is pushed into his own net by Oyrzynski, 6-0.

I know that there was an initiative set by Alex Inglethorpe to reduce the numbers of players in the Academy so that the coaching could be focused on the brightest and the best, but as you say, we've been light in numbers so far this season.

The idea is obviously good, but the penny doesn't always drop for younger players until they start to mature, so we could well be missing out on players who could be better than those we're currently focusing on. All ifs, buts and maybes of course.

I see that there's no Layton Stewart today - with the 23s tomorrow or injured? Has Ste mentioned?

Ste says 'injured' (no body part specified) - as is Balagizi, and the other long term injuries that we already know about.

Rhian Brewster seals Premier League Cup comeback win for U23s

Liverpool U23s made it two wins out of two in the Premier League Cup with a 2-1 comeback victory at Sunderland on Sunday.

Neil Critchley’s Reds had the better of the first half in the Group F tie, with Rhian Brewster’s header denied by home goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock right after the restart as Benji Kimpioka guided a finish beyond the reach of Daniel Atherton and into the corner.

Liverpool reacted excellently, however, and Patterson was called into action by both Isaac Christie-Davies and Tony Gallacher before they levelled.

Brewster’s cross forced a Sunderland own goal with 67 minutes played, and the Reds’ determination was rewarded in the closing stages when Brewster was brought down in the box by Jack Bainbridge and the referee awarded a penalty. The striker took responsibility himself and found the net with a kick down the middle to seal the comeback and keep Critchley’s charges in control of the section.

Liverpool U23s: Atherton, Gallacher, Larouci, Van den Berg, Clayton, Chirivella, Christie-Davies, Dixon-Bonner (Williams, 75), Brewster, Kane, Longstaff.
